SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,919, dated October 2, 1883.
' Application filed August G, 1853. (No model.)
To all whom it may `0011120717,.-
Beit known that I, JOHN OUfrHwArrE, of Oceoia, in the county of Crawford, State of Ohio, have -invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, makin g a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a window with my improved sashfastener applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, showing the lower sash raised. Fig. 3 is the same, showing the lower sash partially raised 5 and Fi g. 4t shows the upper sash partially lowered. Fig'. 5 isa detail perspecthfe view of the locking plate and bar.
My invention relates to devices for securing1 the window-sash against being raised or hold ing it in a raised position when desired; and it consists ofthe combi nation oi' devices hereinafter explained and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents the lockingplate, pivoted to the window-fraine and provided with the. pawl B and hooks O O. Fhrough the center of the pla-te A is a hole, a, through which passes the key or locking har D. NVhen the` lower sash is down and the plate A is thrown up and over theupper rail of the lower sash, as shown in Fig. l, thehook (,l fits snugly over the top of the sash, while the hole a in the plate comes opposite the channel or groove in the side of the windowframe,I when it is only neccessary to push back the key or loekingbar into' the channel andV the pla-te is securely fastened in position. 4(
Vhen the fastener is in this position, the toe of the pawl. B passes into a ratchet-bar formed on the upper sash, as shown in Fig. 4.. l
The pawtand-ratchet bar, I am aware, 1s not new, nor do I claim such, broadly, as my in- 4f vention.
Instead of a ratchet-har, pins or notches ol" any kind may be placed at desirable distances apart, to sustain the action of the pawl. Such pins may also be placed on the lower sash, as shown in Fig. Y
Then the lower sash is to be raised, the fast ener is swung` down until the hook O passes beneath the sash, as shown in Fig. 2, when the fastener is again locked in position hy the sliding' barD.
Having` thus explained my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described sasirlstener, consisting, essentially, oi' the pivoted plate A., provided with the pawl B and hooks O C, and having the-hole a, in combination with a lock ing-bar, D, all constructed to operate subst-air tially as and for the purpose set forth.
.IOH N OUTHVAITE.
