IMPROVEMENT IN PANTALOONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,930, dated August 11, 1874; application filed June 22,1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. BURKE, 0f the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Pautaloons, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in cutting away a portion of the waistband and material at the back part or seat of pantaloons, and placing across the opening thus made a linen backstrap, the whole being covered by means of a broad fall or flap secured to the hind part, and adjusted with suitable tabs and buckles. By thus cutting out the material, and the use of the back-strap. the pants are properly adjusted to the waist without accumulating or creasing the material to such an extent as to cause itto protuberate; and the broad fall or flap, being properly adjusted, will present a smooth and even surface on the outside of the pants, thus permitting the coat to fit closely in the back.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper part of a pair of pantaloons, showing the material cut away, the position of the back-strap, and the broad fall hanging'down. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing the broad fall closed and properly adjusted.
The waistband A and the material at the hind part are cut away so as to form an opening, B, across which is placed an adjustable back-strap, 0, Fig. 1, the opposite ends of which are secured to the cloth D, so that when the pants are adjusted to the waist all the fullness is taken up by the back-strap. The
broad fall E is attached to the seat of the pants, and is provided at the ends with tabs F F, which connect with buckles GG, secured to the waistband A. The said broad fall or flap is adjusted, by the tabs and buckles, correspondingly with the back-strap 0, thus completely covering the opening, back-strap, and all fullness of material, and leaving the outside of it (the broad fall) perfectly smooth and close-fitting. H H are short strips of whalebone inserted in the material at each end of the broad fall, to prevent the breaking down of the cloth, and at the same time insure the fitting of the pants to the hips.
What I claim as my invention is- In a pair of pantaloons, the opening B, linen back strap and buckle G, broad fall or flap E, tabs F F, buckles G G, and whalebone strips H H, all combined and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein'shown and described.
