IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-MUFFS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,852, dated August 4, 1874 application filed June 12, 1874.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AUGUST SGHULTE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Head and Face Muff, of which the following is a specification:

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side view as it appears when put on the head and fastened. Fig. 2 is a similar view when unfastened and taken olf.

This invention relates to a muft which is intended to cover the head and a portion of the face of a person, to protect the same from cold and other influences, and which can be worn with any form of hat or cap. My invention consists of a distcnded chin portion, combined with lapels, which are provided with buttons or other fastening devices in such amanner that, by the said distended chin portion, the muff can be put on and taken oif with great ease, while, when the lappels are fastened, it lits snugly, and is not liable to shift and become displaced on the head of the wearer.

In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of my muli", which is made of cloth, fur, or any other suitable material, and is eut out to conform, as nearly as possible, to the shape of the human head. The top or skull portion of the muff is provided with an opening, B, for the purpose of ventilation; but it can also be made entire or closed. In the face portion of the muft' is an opening, C, of such dimensions as to expose the eyes, nose, and mouth of the wearer. It is obvious, however, that separate openings may be provided for each of these organs. The lower end of the muff is open, and the chin portion D is made of such a pattern that it assumes a distended position when let loose, as shown in Fig. 2, the said chin portion being thus brought out of the line of the most prominent facial angle of the wearer 5 wherefore the muif can be drawn down over the head and face without inconvenience, or without disturbing the pose of the face. In the lower end of the mutt' are lapels or flaps E'E, which are formed by cutting or forming a slit at that point, as represented, which lapels are provided, respectively, with a button and button-hole, or with any other devices suitable for fastening the two together, such as hooks and eyes, or any ordinary catch.

In fastening the muff on the head of the wearer, the said lappels E heilig flexible are made to overlap each other, and are buttoned or fastened as shown in Fig. l, which brings the portion D snugly against and under the chin, whereby the Inuf is held and prevented from shifting or becoming displaced.

I prefer to locate the lapels E E, as in this example, opposite each other on the sides ot' the muif; but they can be located in front and rear, with like result. 1

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A head-muffler provided with the distended chin portion D,in combination with lapels E E, which are provided with a button and buttonhole or other fastening devices, substantially as herein described. i
