M. PLUT SAFETY SHAVER Filed OQB. 29, 1924 m the county of Lake and Patented Mar. 10, 1925.
MARK PLUV'I, or LEADVILLE, COLORADO.
SAFETY SHAVER.
Application filed October 29, 1924. Serial No. 746,460.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that MARK PLUT, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Leadville, state of Colorado, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safet Shavers, of which the following is a speci cation.
"This invention is a safet shaving device, and the object is to provi e a shaving tool equipped with a special form of blade adjustably supported between folding leaves, so that the edge of the blade may be readily projected for honing or stropping and then retracted between the leaves as may be required for the purposes of shaving.
In the drawingv Figure l is a plan view of the device showing the leaves open;
Fi re 2 is aplan view showing the leaves closed:
Figure 3 is an edge a view showing the leaves open;
Figure 4 is an edge view showing the leaves closed;
Figure 5 is a back elevation of the device shown closed;
Figure 6 is a detail of the blade.
Theinvention consists of. two small, thin leaves 1 and 2, hinged together at 3' so as to fold or close flatly down together, and tapered from the hinge joint to the edges 4. One of the leaves as 1, is pierced medially with a small thumb wheel port 5. A milled thumb wheel 6 is rigidly mounted upon a smallpin or shaft 7, and this pin is journaled through supports 8, one at each side of the wheel 6, and the supports 8 are in turn rigidly secured at 9 to the inner face of theleaf 2 in register with the port 5 of the leaf 1. Small pinions 13 are mounted rigidly on the extended ends of thepin 7, the same being less in diameter than the wheel 6. Thus yvhen the leaves 1 and 2 are closed together, the wheel 6 passes through the port 5 ,and slightly protrudes there through so as to render it rollable by the thumb of the user. A thin metal blade 10 is provided conforming to the length and width of the leaves 1 and 2 and adapted to fit between them. This blade is cut away medially and through the back edge so as to leave a sort of elongated slot 11, with sets of opposed and aligned teeth 12 projecting inwardly along the edges of the metal at the slot. The slot 11 and teeth 12 are cut to register with the cogs of the pinions 13, so
tion of rotation of the wheel 6. A look 14 is provided for locking the leaves 1 and 2 together with the blade 10 set between them. This lock consists of small flat levers 15 pivoted by pins 16 to the lateral edges of the leaf 2 and having curved fingers 17 adapted to pass over other pins'18 set opposite the pins 16 in the edges of the other leaf 1. A small rod 19 rigidly joins the outer ends of the levers 15, and grooves 20 are formed along the outer face of the leaf 2, near and parallel to the hinge joint 3, which groove is adapted to receive the rod 19 when the device is locked closed.
In use the blade 10 is positioned between the leaves 1 and 2 as described, and may be pushed out or withdrawn as desired by merely rotating. the wheel 6. When in proper position the rod 19 is swung back towards the hinge 3, and the leaves being pressed together, the fingers 17 encircle the pins 18, thus locking the leaves together with the blade 10 held firmly between them. This device thus affords a handle for the blade 10 either for shaving or for honing or stroppingthe blade. Forhoning or stropping, the blade 10 should be extended further than for the operation of shaving.
While I have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim: 1. A device of the kind described, comprising two rectangular leaves hinged together, one of the leaves having a wheel lport cut therethrough and the other leaf aging a groove along its outer-face near an whee journaled on the inner faceof the last named leafin register with the wheel port of the other leaf the said thumb wheel having smaller pinions rigidly mounted at its sides; a thin blade adapted to fit between the said leaves, the blade having a slot cut in through its rear edge, with aligned teeth parallel to the hmge joint; a thumb projecting at each side of the slot adapted to register with the cogs of the said pinions; pins in the lateral edges of the leaf having wheel port therein; levers pivoted by their ends to the lateral edges of the leaf carrying the thumb wheel, the levers having curved fingers adapted to lockingly engage the pins of the other leaf; and a rod joining the outer ends of the said levers and adapted to fall within the said groove formed in the outer face of one of theleaves as stated.
2. A device of the kind described, com- I prising two leaves hinged together, one of the leaves having a wheel port out therethrough; a thumb wheel with smaller side minions journaled to the inner face of the other leaf and in register with the said wheel port of the opposed leaf; a blade adapted to fit between the leaves, the blade having a slot struck inwardly from the back edge with aligned teeth extending inwardly' at each side of the slot, the said teeth registering with the cogs of the said pinions of the thumb wheel; and means for releasablylocking the leaves together with the blade set between them;
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
