6 Claims. (Cl. 51-158) This. invention relates to new and useful improvements in blade Sharpeners.
The new vand improved blade Sharpener makes use of a pair of face engaging adjacent abrasive plates constructed `of plastic material having an abrasive substance embedded therein. It is proposed that these abrasive plates be provided with an opening vbetween their faces which extends inwards from one of the ends .of the plates. It is proposed to rotatively mount an eccentric on one of the plates within said opening. An important feature of this invention resides in the provision of a blade holder within said opening for holding a blade in sharpening position between the abrasive plates and mounted on said eccentric and provided with a handle extending out from said opening by which theholder lmay be` moved in a rotary fashion.
Another object of this invention resides in providing the blade holder with elements for engaging and holding the blade. Several modified forms are shown which distinguish from each other in the construction of the holding elements on the blade holder.
The invention further contemplates constructie blade holder of various designs and sha-pes for holding various types and kinds of blades. For example, the blade holder mayhold a double edge razor blade, a single edge razor blade, and knives of various designs and constructions.
The invention contemplates'manually moving the handle Vfor operating the blade holder. However, a reciprocating motor maybe used for this purpose.
Another lobject of the invention is the construction of a device as described which is simple durable and Vwhich may be manufactured sold at a reasonablecost.

The blade Sharpener, in accordance with that form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, includes a pair of face engaging adjacent abrasive plates lll and I5 having an opening I6 between their faces and extending inwards from. one of their ends. The plates I4 and I5 are hingedly connected at their other ends with a liingegconstruction Il. The plates I4 and I5 are of thermoplastic or thermo-setting material, preferabiy transparent, so that the sharpening operation be viewed, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
It is proposed that abrasive material be embedded in the plates I4 and I5. This may be by mixing an abrasive powder material with the powder plastic before it is molded, or the abrasive powder material may be forced into the ont of the plates while temporarily ,-ed. An eccentric 2t is rotatively mounted on one of plates, namely, the plate l5. This eccentric 253 is disposed within the opening IS. The eccentric 2e comprises a disc 2| rotative in a oircular recess 22 formed inwards from the inner falce of the plate I5. A stud 23 at the bottom of the disc El' rotatively engages through the plate I5 by which the disc is rotatively mounted. The disc 2l is provided with a projecting pin 24 located at an eccentric position.
A blade holder 25 is disposed within the opening it for holding said blade I9 in sharpening positions between said abrasive plates I4 and i5.
Said blade holder 25 is mounted on the eccentric which guides it in a circular path. The blade holder is also provided with a handle 26 by which it may be conveniently moved. This handle 26 extends out from the opening I6.
The blade holder 25 is in the nature of a at strip of material which is provided with a pair of holding elements 21 such as projecting lugs 21. These elements 21 are adapted to engage openings 28 formed in the blade I9. The blade holder 25 is also provided with a small arcuate opening 29, to provide a. little tolerance, into which the pin 24 projects. The plates I4 and I5 are releasably held together with clasps 30. Each clasp 39 comprises a hook-like projection 3l from the plate I5 engaging a complementary cutout 32 forme-d in the plate I4.
The .operation and use of the blade sharpene may be understood from the following:
The handle 26 may be manually reciprocated so as to cause the eccentric 29 to rotate so as to guide the blade holder 25 in a circular fashion. Since the blade I9 is mounted upon the blade holder. 25 it will move correspondingly and the edges of the blade will be sharpened by engaging the sloping side portions I8 of the opening I6. After the blade I9 is sharpened the plates I4, I5 may be manually opened by forcing them apart so that the latches 3l) open. Then the plate I4 may be swung about the hinge I1 so as to completely expose the blade I9 which may then be removed. The blade holder 25 may also be removed, if desired, merely by lifting it upwards to disengage the arcuate opening 29 from the pin 24.
In Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes 4from the prior form in the construction of the with a slot 31 through which the blade may be engaged. A blade 38 is illustrated engaged in the blade holder by engaging through the slot 31. The blade holder 35 has a handle 39 by which it may be operated. The blade 38, as illustrated, is a single edge razor blade.
In other respects this form of the invention is identical to the prior form and identical parts may be recognized by the same reference numerals. However, the adjacent abrasive plates I4 and I5 are formed with an opening I6' between their adjacent faces which extends inwards from one of the ends of the plates. This opening I6 has sloping side portions I8, and an enlargement 4Il fory receiving Vthe thickened or back side of the one edge razor blade 38.
In Figs. 9 to 11 inclusive, another form of the invention has been disclosed. In this form the blade Sharpener includes a pair of face engaging adjacent abrasive plates 42 and 43 which are hingedly connected at one of their ends by a hinge construction 44. The plates 42and 43 are long enough to accommodate a knife 45, to sharpen said knife. An opening 46 is formed between the adjacent faces of the plates 42 and 43 and extends inwards from one of the ends of said plates. This opening 46 has sloping side portions 41 for engaging the cutting edge of the knife 45 for sharpening it. A blade holder 52 is disposed within che open-A ing 46 and is for the purpose of holding the knife 45 in sharpening position between the abrasive plates 42 and 43. Said blade holder 52 is formed with a slot 54 into which the knife 45 may be engaged. The blade holder 52 is provided with a handle 55 projecting from the opening 46 by which the blade holder may be moved. The blade holder 52 is also provided with an opening 56 for engaging upon the eccentric pin 5I. The plates 42 and 43 are releasably held together with a catch The operation and use of this blade Sharpener may be understood from the following:
l-A knife 45 is placed within the blade holder 52 so that the handle of the knife rests on the handle 55 of the lblade holder, and the blade of the knife extends into the slot 54. The handle 55 and the knife 45 may be manually held together and these parts may be reciprocated so as to cause the eccentric 48 to move the blade holder 52 in a circular path for sharpening the edge of the knife 45 between the sharpening side portions 41. The abrasive plates 42l and 43 may be opened by causing the catch 51 to open. Now the knife 45 may be removed from the blade holder 52.
In Fig. 12 another embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in which the blade Sharpener, which is illustrated in Figs. 6 to 8, is shown connected with an electric reciprocating motor 58. This motor connects with the handle 39. When the motor 58 operates the handle 39 will be reciprocated and the eccentric will move the blade in a circular path.l
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right 4is reserved to` all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as dened in the. appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
l. A blade Sharpener, comprising a pair of face engaging adjacent abrasive plates having an opening between their faces extending inwards from one of the ends of said plates, an eccentric rotatively mounted on one of said plates within said opening, a blade holder within said opening for holding a blade in sharpening position between said abrasive plates and mounted on said eccentric, and a handle for moving said holder connected with v said ,holder and extending out from said opening.
2. A blade Sharpener, comprising a pair of face engaging adjacent abrasive plates having an opening between their faces extending inwards from one of the ends of said plates, an eccentric rotatively mounted on one of said plates within said opening, a blade holder Within said opening for holding a blade in sharpening position between'said abrasive plates and mounted on said eccentric, anda handle for moving said holder connected with said holder and extending out from said opening, said blade holder having elements for engaging and holding said blade.
3. A blade Sharpener, comprising a pair of face engaging adjacent abrasive plates having an opening-between their faces extending inwards from oneofthe 'ends of said plates, an eccentric rotatively mounted on one of said plates within said opening, a blade holder within said opening for holding a blade in sharpening position between said abrasive plates and mounted on said eccentric, and a handle for moving said holder connected with said holder and extending out from said opening, said blade holder having projecting pegs for engaging into openings in said blade.

A blade Sharpener, comprising a pair of face engaging adjacent abrasive plates having an opening between their faces extending inwards from one of the ends of said plates, an eccentric rotatively mounted on one of said plates Within said opening, a blade holder Within said opening for holding a blade in sharpening position between said abrasive plates and mounted on said eccentric, and a handle for moving said holder connected with said holder and extending out from said opening, said blade holder having a slot through which said blade may be engaged and b'y which the blade is held in position.
5. A blade Sharpener, comprising a pair of face engaging adjacent abrasive plates having an opening between their faces extending inwards from one of the ends of said plates, an eccentric rotatively mounted on one of said plates within said opening, a blade holder Within said opening for holding a blade in sharpening position between said abrasive plates and mounted on said eccentric, and a handle for moving said holder connected With said holder and extending out from said opening, said blade holder having a slot through which said blade may be engaged and by which the blade is held in position, said slot being open at one end whereby a knife blade may be engaged in said holder and the handle of the knife may rest upon said handle.

A blade Sharpener, comprising a pair of face engaging adjacent abrasive plates having an opening between their faces extending inwards from one of the ends of said plates, an eccentric rotatively mounted on one of said plates within said opening, a blade holder Within said opening for holding a blade in sharpening position between said abrasive plates and mounted on said eccentric, and a handle for moving said holder connected with said holder and extending out from said opening, said abrasive plates being of thermo-plastic material with abrasive material embedded therein.
