The present invention relates to a pen knife of the pocket type wherein the blade pivots into the handle when not in use, and the principal object of the invention is to provide novel means for holding the blade extended so that it cannot be accidently swung to a closed position which so fre-.

quently causes injury to the person using the knife. 1

vention lies in the provision of a knife of this nature which is simple in construction, eificient and reliable, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable, easy to manipulate, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the handle includes sides 5 and 6 which are fixed to a back bar 7 at one edge. A pin 8 pivots a blade 9' between the handle sections 5 and 6 and also pivots the handle sections in relation to each other, said pin being located at one end of said handle sections and one end of the blade. The handle section 6 is provided at its pivoted end on its inner face with an arcuate groove 10 of approximately 180 concentric in relation to the opening through which the pin 8 extends. The blade 9, is provided with a pin 11 which moves in the groove 10 and the ends of this groove limit the movement of the blade to a 180 angle with respect to Another very important object of the inr the handle 6 and vice versa. The end 7 of the back 7 abuts a shoulder 12 on the pivoted end of the blade 9, and limits the swinging movement in respect to the section 5 in one direction, while the back 7 limits the movement of the blade in'the other direction. In other words the blade 9 swings only approximately 180 in respect to section 5 and vice versa.

It will therefore be seen that when the blade is in an extended position, in respect to the sections of the handle as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the blade cannot be swung in either direction and therefore remains in a rigid extended position.

Fig. 2, in a clockwise direction, and then the section 5 is swung over the blade in a counterclockwise direction, so that the blade is confined rigidly between the two sections 5 and 6.

In order to hold the sections 5 and 6 in parallelism while the blade is extended or In order to fold the knife, it is necessary to swing the section 6 over upon the blade 9, referring to folded, I provide a suitable locking mechanism such as is shown to advantage in Figs.

4, 5 and 6. The section 6 is provided with a movable portion 14 having a lug 15 with an offset end 16. This lug is movable in a recess 17 in one portion of the back 7 at the end opposite to the pivot pin 8. A spring 18 impinges against the lug 15 and holds it in an engaged position normally. The lug 15 is adapted to engage in a keeper 19 provided on the handle section 5.

It will thus be seen that by moving the portion 14 in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 4., the lug may be released from the keeper so that the sections 5 and 6 may be swung in relation to each other and in relation to the blade as previously indicated.

It is thought that the construction, operation, and utility of this knife will now be clearly understood by those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example, since in actual practiceit attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the abovejdescription.

It will be apparent that numerous changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed, or sacrificing any of its ad vantages.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new is A knife of the class described including a pair of handle sections, a blade, means for pivoting the handle sections and blades to-- gether, said blade being located between said sections, one handle section being provided with an arcuate move of approximately 180 concentric with the pivot, said blade being provided with a lug extending into the groove, a back between the handle sections, a shoulder formed on the blade abuttable with one end of the back to limit the blade to swing approximately 180 with the other handle section, and means for holding the handle sections together consisting of "a recess in the back remote from the pivot 12in, a movable portion at one end of one andle section provided with a lateral lug on which is an offset end movable in said recess in the back, a keeper on the other handle section and adapted to be engaged by said lateral lug, and a spring bearing against said lug and adapted to normally hold it in said engaged position.
