EDWARD B. IVEIDKNECHT, F PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 684,016, dated October 8, 1901.
Application filed October 29, 1900. Serial No. 34,706. (No model.)
T 0 @ZZ whom t may concer-u:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. lVElD- KNECHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Knives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in pocket-knives, and has for its object to construct a knife so that its blade may be held rigidly in either an open or closed position.
A further object is to provide a knife that will not be dependent upon the back-spring ordinarily used.
I am aware that it is not new to accomplish the object last above mentioned; but in addition to the object first set forth I desire to improve on the construction heretofore brought out and to furnish a more convenient and simple construction.
In the appended drawings, Figure lis a side View of the knife in its open position With some of its working portions removed. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the saine. Fig. 4 is a side view of a sleeve or ferrule used with the knife. Fig.
5 is a top View of a keeper used in keeping the sleeve or ferrule in place. Fig. 6 is a front view of the knife, showing the ferrule or sleeve and a keeper in their proper positions, with the blade locked in an open position. Fig. 7 is a side View with the blade closed and locked. Fig. 8 is a front view of the same. Y
A is the handle, which is bifurcated at one end and within which is held, by means of a rivet B, the blade C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The said bifurcated end is made smaller than' the handle to form the shoulder D. Upon the shank thus created is a slotted sleeve or ferrule E of the form shown in Fig. 4. This is snugly fitted upon the shank and presents the appearance shown in Figs. 6, 7,
and 8. The said sleeve is seated upon the shoulder and held :in position against movement longitudinally by a keeper F, Fig. 5, the latter being held in place by means of screws G, which enter the holes II of said keeper and threaded holes I, Fig. 3, of the shank. The keeper is slotted at F' to straddle the blade, as will be understood. Nhen the blade is open, the shoulder C thereof bears upon the said keeper F, as shown i'n Fig. 7 in dotted lines. The ferrule E is bev,- eled on its top edge, as shown in the figures, to form a cam, which is designed to be carried beneath the projection C2 of the blade, as shown in Fig. 6. It is evident that the ferrule is revoluble on the shank and by means of the nurled ribthereon may be turned by the fingers so as to engage the said projections C2, as described and shown. The bevel on the top of this member is a gradual one, so that the blade can be easily forced into position. It is evident that when the slot'in the ferrule registers with that in the handle of the knife the blade can be readily closed. lVhen the latter position is reached, the blade may be locked, so that it cannot open in the pocket, by shifting the ferrule so as to cover the back edge of the blade, as shown in Fig. 8. In order to accomplish this, a portion of the said ferrule is cut out at the bottom next to the slot, leaving a notch E', which permits the ferrule to pass the projection C, as shown in said Fig. 8. It is evident that a notch similar to that referred to may be cut out of the other corner of the ferrule also, so that this member may be moved in either direction to lock the blade. In either direction the results Will be the same. In addition to this the bevel at the top of the ferrule may be made on both sides of the slot, so that the blade may be locked in its open position by a movement of the ferrule in other direction Without paying any particular attention to the direction of movement imparted to it. Thus it will be seen that I do not confine myselfto any particular construction in my device, and Various other changes may be made in consequence.
I claimy l. In a knife of the character described, the combination of the handle A, the blade C pivoted thereon, a slotted ferrule E surrounding the shank of the handle and blade, a keeper F on the end of the handle adapted for keeping the ferrule in its position, the said keeper having a slot to permit movement of the IOO blade, the outer edge of the ferrule beneath the keeper F being beveled, whereby by a rotary movement thereof it will engage and hold the blade in its open position, said ferrule also adaptedl to engage the blade when in its closed position to prevent it from opening substantially as set forth and described.
2. In a knife of the charaeterdeseribed, the combination of the handle A and its blade C, of a shoulder D on the former, a slotted ferrule E surrounding the end of the handle and blade and restingupon the said shoulder, the outer edge of the ferrule being beveled substantially as shown, to engage the blade as set forth, a keeper F secured to the end of the handle for keeping the ferrule in its seat and upon which one shoulder of the blade is adapted to be seated, said ferrule adapted to prevent the movement of the blade when the latter is closed Within the handle as set forth.
3. In a knife of the character described, the combination of the handle A having the shank, and the shoulder D, the blade C pivoted to the said shank7 a projectinglug C2 on the blade at its front edge, the projection C' on its hack edge, both said projections being near the base of said blade, a ferrule E snrrounding the shank of the handle, the saine having a slot therein parallel with the bladeslot of the handle and adapted to be brought into line with such blade-slot, the notch E at the bottom of the ferrule-slot, the top edge of the ferrule being beveled, the keeper F secured. to the shank and having the slot F' therein for the passage of the blade as it swings on its pivot, said keeper adapted to keep the ferrule in place beneath t and the shoulder D, all being arranged whereby by turning the ferrule the blade may be locked in its open or closed position as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EDWARD B. VEIDKNECHT.
