Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to a kn fe sharpening device, and my invention aimsto provide a simple, durable and inexpensive tool that may be easily and quickly-manipulated to sharpen the'bladeof a knife, pair of scissors or other cutting implement, without any danger of the blade being provided with a wire edge or otherwise injured.
. My invention further aims to provide a knife sharpener embodying opposed disks frictionally held from rotationbut adapted to be turned to present successive points of the edges in contactto provide blade engaging surfaces, thus permitting of the tool being repeatedly used without-becoming unduly worn or dull.
The mechanical construction entering into the tool will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool, partly broken away and partly in section; Fig.2 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the detached tool frame;
Fig, l is a front elevation of the same, and
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of a rotary sharpening device.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a handle, preferably made of wood and the outer end of said handle has a head or peripheral head 2 and a central cylindrical here or recess 3.
4 denotes a comparatively flat and substantially rectangular metallic frame having the inner end thereof provided with a tang 5 which may be driven into the recess?) to engage in opposed walls of the recess, as at 6 and thus prevent the frame 4 from rotating relative to said handle. The frame 4 abuts the head or outer end of the handle and said frame has a set of openings 7 and an open slot or kerf 8 extending between the set of openings to provide clearance for a blade 9 adapted to be sharpened by the tool.
Mounted or journaled in the openings 7 of the frame 4 are tubular rivets or spindles 9 supporting hardened cutters or sharpening disks 10 which are loose on the rivets or spindles when saidrivets or spindles are fixed in the frame, or the disks may be fixed on the rivets or spindles when the latter are loose inthe frame. In either instance the rivets or spindles have heads 11 to prevent displacement of the disks 10 relative to the frame 4, whereby said disks will be maintained in opposed relation at the side of the frame 4 with the peripheries thereof c0ntacting or approximately so, as shown in Fig. 1. The tubular rivets or spindles are flanged over the disk in each instance on one side and flange/d over the aperture of the frame 4: on the opposite side, and these flanged ends of the tubular rivets tightly engage the diskand frame frictionally holding the disks from rotation in operation but permitting the disks to be turned by an instrument, as for instance a pair of pliers appliedto one of the disks/with sufficient pressure to turn one disk or the other thus bringing different points of the periphcries of the disks into engagement at the center whereby new cutting edges are positioned for use. The edges of the disks 10 are in the plane of the slot or kerf 8 and the blade 9Kcan be moved back and forth against the disks 10, at the contacting p0 ripheries thereof, or the tool may be moved back and forth over the blade. In either instance, the opposed cutter and sharpening members are adapted to sharpen the cutting edge of the blade 9 and since the disks 10 are rotatable it is obvious that different surfaces thereof may be presented to the blade 9.
It is apparent that the recess 3 may be provided with a suitable filler to assist in holding the frame 4:, and that the metallic parts of the tool may be made of the best of material finished so as not to corrode.
One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated but it is to be understood that the construction is susceptible to such changes as fall. within the scope of the ap pended claims.
What I claim is 1. A tool for sharpening blades which may be drawn across the blade being sharpened, comprising a substantially fiat metallic frame having a pair of centrally apertured portions at the end therof, there being a slot extending between said portions from the end thereof to a distance beyond horizontal line passing througlithe centers of said apertures in said .apertured portions, a single flat cutting disk centrally fixed to each of said apertured portions, anda fastening device passing through each aperture and engaging each disk for retaining the same in position with one surface thereof lying against a surface of the frame, thetwo I slot extending between said portions from the end to a distance beyond a line passing through the center of said apertures in, said portions, a single cutting disk adapted to be secured to each of said portions, a means passing through said apertures in said portions and through an aperture in each of said disks foi securingsaid disks to the holder, the two disks lying in the same plane with their peripheries in contact, and a handle projecting from said frame disposed in a plane parallel with the sidesof said flat disks and having a center linepassing betweensaid disks at a right angle to said fastening means for the disks.
3. A tool for sharpening blades adapted to be drawn across a blade being sharpened, comprising a substantial ly flat metallic fra-inehaving apair of separated portions at the end thereof, a single fiat cutting disk carried by each of said portions, the metallic frame having a slot open at its outer end extending betweensaid separated end portions and to a distance beyonda horizontal line passing through the ,axis of each of said disks, said two disksbeing disposed, in the same plane and in contact at the peripheries thereof, and =a handle projecting from. said frame disposed in a plane parallel with the flat surfaces of, said vdisks and hav ing a center line passing between said disks, In testimony whereof .I s gnature in presence of two witnesses.
