COMBINED RAZOR AND STROPPER.
- Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 17, 19141.
Application filed May 27, 1912, Serial 110. 699,988. Renewed August 14, 1913. Serial No. 784,826.
. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RA1 MOND A. Wrr'rL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Razors and Stro-ppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined razor and stropping machine, and the object is to provide a device of this character which will be simple of construction and efficient in operation. l r
. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanyin drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a side elevation of a combined razor and stropping device built in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same looking toward the edge of the blade in 'Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section of the device taken on line 33 in Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a handle 4, which is of ordinary construction, and a tang 5 pivoted to the handle 4 in the usual manner. A spindle 6 is rigidly secured in the end portion of the tang 5 and a substantially C-shaped clamp or blade holder 7 pivoted at its end portionson said spindle 6 in a manner to rotate on said spindle. A looking clamp 8 is pivoted on the tang 5, as at 9, and is substantially U-shaped in cross section to engage three sides of the end of said tang and the end of said C-shaped blade holder and is provided with a notch 10 adapted to engage the sides of the C-shaped blade holder 7 to lock such C-shaped blade holder onthe spindle 6 to prevent it from rotating on its spindle.
A bevel gear 11 is secured on the end portion of the blade holder 7 as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, to rotate with said blade holder. A roller,v 12 is journaled on the spindle 6 and a bevel gear 13 is secured to said roller to rotate therewith. A hub 14 is rigidly secured to the spindle 6 and a bevel gear 15 journaled on such hub by means of a stud 16 in a manner to mesh the bevel gear 15 with the bevel gears 11 and 13 so that the rotation of the roller in one direction will 7 is substantially wedged-shaped throughout the length of its blade engaging surface so that the movement longitudinally of the lock 18 will cause the sides of the blade holder 7 to firmly bind the blade therebetween. A catch 19 is formed on the inner side of the blade holder 7 in the path of the lock 18 to limit the longitudinal movement of such lock on the blade holder.
A safety shield 20 of resilient material, preferably of sheet metal, is formed in substantially the shape indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 and held in position on the device by means of its' resiliency. Such shield is provided with the ordinary safety tongues 21 to protect the cutting edge of the razor in use.
When the device is to be used for stropping the blade, the safety shield 20 is removed from the device and the lock 8 turned to its dotted line position in Fig. 1, and the device drawn across the hone, strop or other sharpening device in the usual manner, so that it is not necessary to turn the handle at the end of each stroke. The roller 12 causes the blade holder to be revolved on the spindle 6 to always drag the blade behind'the roller in moving the device in both directions on such sharpening device. In moving the device, in the direction of the arrow 22, Fig. 1, the blade would be drawn behind the roller as in the same position, as shown in said figure, and in moving the device in the direction indicated by the arrow 23, the roller would begin to turn, and by means of the bevel gear connection, would rotate the blade holder 7 on the spindle 6 in substantially one hundred and eighty degrees and the razor would be drawn behind the roller. The roller, in either case, would only rotate until the blade contacted the sharpening surface and would then become locked and drag. I
When the device is to be used as a razor the shield may or may not be used, as desired, and the lock 8 placed in its full line position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 to prevent the blade holder from revolving on the spindle 6 and the razor used in the usual manner.
ing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but
desire to avail myself of such variationsand modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y
1. A device of the kind described comprising a tang; a blade holder journaled on said tang; a roller journaledon said tang and connected with said blade holder to cause rotation thereof; a lock on said tang adapted to engage said blade holder to arrest rotation thereof to enable the device to be used for shaving, substantially as described.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a tang; a spindle on said tang; a slitted substantially C-shaped blade holder pivotally mounted on said spindle; a roller journaled on said spindle between the pivotal ends of said blade holder; bevel gears connecting said blade holder and said roller; and a lock pivoted on said tang for arresting the rotation of said blade holder on said spindle to enable the same to be used for shaving, substantially as described.
3. A device of the kind described comprising a tang; a spindle on said tang; a slitted substantially C-shaped blade liolder pivotally mounted on said spindle, said blade holder being longitudinally wedged shaped; a roller journaled on said spindle between the pivotal ends of said blade holder; bevel gears connecting said blade holder and said roller, a blade in the slit of said blade holder; a clamp mounted for sliding longitudinally on said blade holder to lock said blade therein; and a lock pivoted on said tang for arresting the rotation of said blade holder on said spindle to enable the same to be used for shaving, substantially as described. I
4. A. device of the kind described comprising a tang; a spindle on said tang; a blade holder journaled on said spindle; a roller journaled on said spindle between the end portions of said blade holder; bevel gears connecting said blade holder and said roller; a lock on said tang adapted to arrest .the rotation of said blade holder on said spindle to enable the same to be used for shaving, sub
stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
