RAZOR OR BLADE STROPPING MACHINE.
To alt whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, WITMER J. KENDIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, 1n the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor or Blade Stropp1ng Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in a stropping machine or a device to be used for stropping razors or safety-razor blades, and it relates more particularly to that class of stropping devices having a flexible stropband or strop of leather or other suitable material capable of sharpening razors or blades where all that the operator has to do 1S to reciprocate the strop, the rest of the operation being automatically carried out by the mechanism.
The objects of the invention are to provide a razor or blade stropping device by means of which razors or safety-razor blades may be stropped or sharpened, whenever necessary 1n a simple and effective manner, the blade always having the proper bight against the strop.
Another object of the invention is to produce a device of this class in which the razor blade is stationary and the strop mounted in an oscillating frame or holder, which gives a more even bight and obviates all danger caused by the flopping of the razor handle, as is the case with other stropping devices where the blade is oscillated.
Still another object of my device is to produce a stropping machine for double edged safety-razor blades where both of the edges may be sharpened at the same operation without any readjustment or turning of the blade, which I believe is a feature not found in any other stropping machine.
lVith these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain combination and construction of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed in the appended specification and fully illustrated in the annexed drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views, but it is fully understood that while I have here described my device as herewith illustrated, I do not confine myself to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made in the construction Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawings :In Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, the device comprises a yoke 1, supplied with a securing ring 2, and having the ends of its depending arms rigidly secured to the squared ends of a razor-holding rod 8, by the screws 4; said razor-holding rod being provided with a spring bladeholding clamp 5. Mounted within said yoke and upon the projecting ends of said razor-holding rod 3, is an oscillating strop holder comprising the end plates 6, and 7, which are joined together by the side plates 8, and the stay-rods 9, and said strop holder is further provided with the rollers 10, 11, and 12; the distance between the pivot point and the roller 10, being much greater than Fig. 12, is-

Referring to Figs. 5, t3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12, of the drawings a slight modification of the device is shown, by which it is adapted to the double-edge safety blade, the difference being that the rod 3, is tubular in form and provided with a longitudinal slot 16, in its opposite sides and having its ends permanently secured to the side arms of the yoke 1, at a higher point than that employed in the device as used with ordinary razors, and the blade 1-1, is held in place by being placed on the rod 5, with the studs 17, engaging its orifices, and the rod 5, carrying the blade 1 1, is then inserted through the slots 15,
into the tubular rod 3, the edges of the blade 14, extending through the slots 16, in the sides of said tubular rod The ends of the strop 13, in this case are placed on the outside of the rollers 11, and 12, and it will thus be seen that both of the edges of the blade are sharpened in the same way and at the same time without having to remove the blade or reverse it.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a razor-blade stropping device, the combination with a stationary frame formed with a tubular blade holder provided with a longitudinal slot in the opposite sides thereof, of a blade-holding rod provided with blade-retaining bosses and adapted to slide within said tubular blade holder with a portion of the blade carried thereby eX- tending through said slots, a strop holder swingably mounted within said frame and means for bringing the strep into a sharpening contact with the surfaces of said blade by the action of said strep.

In a razor blade stropping machine of the class described, the combination with a yoke shaped stationary frame, of a bladeholding means rigidly secured between the arms of said yoke shaped frame, an independent blade-carrying means adapted to be inserted within said blade-holding means, a strep holder swing-ably mounted within said stationary frame and provided with strepcarrying and guiding rollers, and retainil'ig side plates, slots formed in one end of said strep holder and in the adjacent arm of said yoke for the passage of the blade when said slots are in a registering position with each other.
