` This invention relates to a .device especi ally designed for sh,a-rpen-ingl lrazor blades, and `arms to :provide novel inea-ns vwhereby a ,number of blades may be'supported Within acasingand held-in,such-positionto be -en-` gaged by a rotaryl'sharpeninginember. y
YEen important object ofthe inventionis to plovide a Y'device Qfftllisfharacter wherein theblades may be readily and easily removed and positioned within the casing.
Afurther obj ectV ofthe invention is to provide a sharpening device'wherein the pressure may be. regulated by the operator while the device is in operation.
lilith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts'a'nd in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a sharpening device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a. transverse sectional view therethrough.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4l a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Figure 2.
`Figure 5 is a section through a modified form.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device includes a circular casing indicated generally by the reference character 5 which may be constructed of any suitable material such as hard rubber or the like.
Secured within the casing is a base indi'- cated by the reference character 6 which base is formed preferably of soft rubber, the
same beine secured in ositio'n within thek casing 5 in any suitable manner.
Extending upwardly from the central portion of the casing is a pin 7 that passes through a central opening in the base 6, 'which pin is provided with a groove arranged adjacent to its upper end, for the reception of the spring 8 vwhich is carried by the cap 9, so that the cap may be readily and easily removed. or positioned on the pin 7.
As illustrated by igure fl, the base f6 is Y y.formed with a plurality yof integral blade supports 1Q which are formedwi-th, inclined uppersurtaces jtol receive the i. blades y.11 and support them; at.Y obliquev angles ,with .respect 1 to-y abrading(element,- to belliereinafter `more ifully described.
Y i .Luge .L12-extend up wardlyfo'lh ther upper surfaces offthefbladesupports 10 and .are adapted lto t within the usualrbladecopen- `ings c to .secure the blades against `movenrient whileV they are being sharpened.
Arranged adjacent to the lower edge 0f each blade supporting member 10 is an inf tegral boss 13 which is provided with a groove-11i for the reception of one edge of the blade to the end that the blade will be held against tilting under the action of the abrading member.
The abrading member is indicated by the reference character l5 and includes a disklike body portion formed with a central opening to permit the same to be positioned `over the pin `7'.
Secured to the under surface of the member 15 is a leather disk 16 which acts as a strop when rotated over the blades supported in the casing and which in the presentv showing are indicated by the reference character l1.
The disk or member 15 is rotated by means of the linger pieces 18 which are arranged adjacent to the central portionl of the disk-like body portion 15 to theend thatv pressure may be directed to the body portion 15 by the operator, to accomplish the purpose of the invention.
As shown by Figure 5, the base 6 isvcut away to accommodate blades such as indil disk, it is to be understood that anotherv body portionsuch asshown at 15 may be used, the same having an abrading surfacel lll) llO formed of emery or the like for sharpening the blades.
In the use of the device, the blades are positioned in a manner as shownl by Figure 2 and the member 15 positioned thereover, after which the member 15 may be rotated causing the leather disk to rub the cutting surfaces of the blades to sharpen them.
l l. A razor blade sharpening device embodying a circular casing having an upstanding flange, a flexible supporting member Within the casing, said flexible supporting member having blade supports formed integral therewith, said blade supports having eonoaved upper surfaces and having bosses formed with grooves to receive the edges of blades, to be sharpened and an abrading member'rotatably mounted Within the casing and adapted to engage blades supported therein.
2. A razor blade Sharpener embodying a casing, a removable flexible supporting member fitted Within the casing, said support ing member having inclined supporting surfaces, lugs extending from the supporting surfaces and adapted to pass through openings of razor blades to secure the razor blades against movement, elastic bosses formed on the supporting member and having grooves to receive the edges of razor blades to prevent tilting of the razor blades While they are being sharpened, and a rotary abrading member adapted to be operated over the supporting member to Contact With l the blades positioned on the supporting member to sharpen the blades.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afixed my signa# ture.
JOHN H. GIBSON.
