BERNARDUS JANSEN, OF FRIDAY HARBOR, WASHINGTON.
DISK-SH ARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1916.
Application filed October 29, 1915. Serial No. 58,632.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARDUS JANsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Friday Harbor, in the county of San Juan and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Disk- Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to disk Sharpeners and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a disk sharpener in the form of an implement adapted to be used by hand for application to the periphery of a disk for sharpening the same while the disk is in operation in turning the soil.
With the above object in view the sharpener comprises a handle to which oppositely disposed arms are pivotally and adjustably attached with means for holding the arms at an adjusted position with relation to each other. Grooved rollers are journaled upon the free end portions of the arms and are adapted to receive the peripheral portion of the disk whereby the implement is held in proper position with relation to the disk. Other rollers are journaled at the inner end portions of the said arms and are adapted to travel at the side of the disk. An eye is carried by the handle and a sharpening bit is adjustably mounted in the eye and the edge of the disk moves under the bit whereby the sharpening of the edge is effected.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is an edge view of a disk showing the sharpener applied. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the sharpener. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of parts of the same cut on the line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a similar view out on the line 66 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the inner end portion of one of the arms of the sharpener.
The sharpener comprises a handle 1 having at one end a bolt 2 provided with an eye 3. Arms 4 are provided at their inner ends with openings 5 through which the shank of the bolt 2 passes. When the arms are in position upon the bolt their inner ends overlap each other and their opposite faces are provided with serrations 6 which engage each other and hold the arms at adjusted positions with relation to each other.
A bit 7 is carried in the eye 3 and a wedge 8 is inserted in the said eye at the side of the bit. A set screw 9 passes transversely through the side of the eye and at its inner end may engage the wedge or the bit whereby the said parts are held in adjusted positions with relation to the eye. Rollers 10 are freely journaled at the inner end portions of the arms 4 and the side of the disk is adapted to move along the said rollers when the device is applied as hereinafter explained. Rollers 11 are freely journaled at the free end portions of the arms 1 and are provided at their peripheries with grooves adapted to receive the edge portions of the disk when the device is applied.
A hook 12 may be connected with either one of the arms 4 and its bill end may be caught around the shaft upon which the disk is mounted or the other part of the frame of the harrow or plow to which the disk is applied whereby the sharpener may be held in position at the periphery of the disk and the bit may be held under leverage against the disk in order to properly sharpen the same.
The device hereinbefore described is applied to a disk while it is in use for turning the soil and in application the hook 12 is caught around the shaft or in any part of the harrow or plow and the operator holds the handle 1 in the hand while the disk is permitted to move at its side along the rollers 10. The periphery of the disk travels in the grooves of the rollers 11 and the bit 7 is held firmly against the beveled edge of the disk, consequently the said bit sharpens the edge of the disk while the disk is r0- tating.
It is apparent that the device may be easily and quickly transferred from one disk to another so that during the operation of disking the soil the disk may be maintained in a proper sharpened condition.
From the above description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a disk sharpener of simple structure is provided and the same may be easily and quickly applied to a disk while the disk is in use for the purpose of keeping the disk in a proper sharpened condition.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A disk sharpener comprising a handle, a bolt carried by the handle and provided with an eye, a bit located in the eye, arms pivotally mounted upon the'bolt and rollers carried by the arms and engageable With the periphery of a. disk.
2. A disk sharpener comprising an arm, a bolt carried by the arm and provided with an eye, a bit adjustably mounted in the eye, arms pivotally mounted upon the bolt, means for securing the arms at adjusted positions With relation to each other, rollers carried by the arms and adapted to bear against the peripheral portion of a disk.
3. A disk sharpener comprising a handle, a bolt carried by the handle and provided with an eye, a bit locatedin the eye, arms pivotally mounted upon the handle,'means for securing the arms at an adjusted posi-' tion with relation to each other, rollers journaled at the inner portions of the arms and Copies of this patent may be obtained for rollers j ournaled at the outer portions of the arms.
4. A disk sharpener comprising a handle, a bolt carried by the handle and provided With an eye, a bit secured in the eye, arms pivotally mounted upon the bolt, means for securing the arms at an adjusted position with relation to each other, rollers ournaled at the inner portions of the arms, and other rollers journaled at the outer portions of the arms and provided with peripheral grooves.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERNARDUS JANSEN.
