PATENT g OFFICE.
LINFIELD G. BAILEY, OF EAST KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
HARROW-DISK SHARPENER.
AppIication filed July 14, 1924. Serial No. 725,821.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINFIELD Gr. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Kansas City, in the county of Clay and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Harrow-Disk Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a simple and inexpensive method of constructing means for sharpening disk harrows and disk cultivators.
With the above broadly stated object in view and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this application.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of my improvement,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view as cut approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view as cut on the line 8-3 of Fig. 2.
The disks 1 of an ordinary harrow are usually mounted upon the shaft 2, and separated by collars 33.
My improvement includes the employment of a bar 4 having its lower end forked as at 5, in order that it may ride on the collar 3 adjacent the concaved face of the disks 1.
On the outer end of the bar 3, I have placed, through a hole therein, a handle 6 preferably removable in order that it may be reversed to the other side of the bar and is preferably held in place by a cotter preferably ground to a beveled edge, that it may sharpen the disk more readily.
When the device is positioned as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawing, it will be noted that the sharpening element 11 is in c011- tacting engagement with the edge of the disk 1. The bar 3 may be held against the axle and the harrow may be moved forwardly to completely revolve the disks, and in such operation the sharpening element 11 will act on the entire peripheral edge of the disk to effectively sharpen the same.
It is to be noted that the sharpening element 11 is preferably of such construction and design that it may when worn, be reversed or turned end for end, in order that all four edges of such blade may be utilized.
It is obvious that when one disk has been sharpened by this device that the entire device may be lifted from its position on the collar and the forked end of the bar 3 placed about another collar and the same procedure used in sharpening another disk.
Having described my invention in one form, I do not wish to be restricted to the precise construction as illustrated herein as it is obvious that various changes may be made therein without changing the principle involved herein. What I claim as new herein is:
In a harrow disk sharpener, an elongated bar provided at one end with a forked bearing portion, a tool carrier comprising a port ion having a slotted aperture adapted to slidably receive the body portion of said bar and provided with a retaining device adapted to retain the carrier on the bar and a solid portion provided transversely with a movable clamping bolt, and an elongated blade mounted axially and rotatably on the clamping bolt on said carrier, whereby said blade may be rotated to alternately dispose the opposite end portions thereof in angular adjustment to the periphery of the harrow disk and clamped to the carrier to retain the adjustment.
