'UNITED STATES PATENT EE'IGE.
GEORGE S. BRUCE, OE CINCINNATI, OIIIO.
lMPROVEMENT IN CQAL-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,595, dated June 30, 1874 application led Api-n 25, i874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. BRUCE, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Coal-Box, ot' which the following` is a specification This invention relates to a receptacle having two distinct compartments or magazines in it, both open at top, one for lump coal, and the other for slack-coal or screenings. The lmnp-coal compartment has a slatted or perforated bottom, throughor behind which all finer particles, such as dust, falls into the passage or dischargingchannel ot' the other receptacle or magazine.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Eig. 2 is a vertical section, of my improved coal-box. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one form of my slatted bot tom.
A represents a box or bin of any suitable shape and size, and provided with a hinged lid, B, and extended base C. Extending from side to side of this box is a partition, D, that divides the box into two unequal magazines or receptacles, E F, of which the larger and front one, E, is intended for lump coal, and the smaller one, F, for slack or screenings. This partition 1) is preferably inclined, as shown, soas to insure the slack-coal fallin gto the bottom of its appropriate magazine, from whence it may be removed through channel G.
The partition D may occupy grooves in the side of the box, and be capable of being drawn out, if desired.
The magazine E is provided with a slatted or perforated bottom, c, through or behind which al1 dirt and dust that fall from the lmnp-coal must be deposited within the channel G, and can, therefore, be removed with the slack or screenings. His a flap that covers the entrance to channel G; but, if preferred, a sliding or other door or shutter may be subA stituted for said hinged flap; or the aperture may be left open, if desired. I is a button or catch to hold the flap H in the open position, when desired. A ledge, rib, molding, gor flange, c, around the base of the box, prevents dust and slack escaping off from said base into the flo r. This ledge serves, also, to retain upon the base-plate C any water that may accumulate from melting ice or snow that may he deposited in the box with the coal or screenings.
The base may terminate flush, or nearly so, with the vertical face ofthe box, and its` door be hin ged by its lower edge, and, when open, constitute, in effect, an extension of said base.
This box, with its described adjunets, may
be composed of wood or metal.
I claim as my invention- A coal-box, A, provided with the lump-coal chamber E, having outlet D and slack-magazine F, (the cover B common to both,) channel G, and door H at the bottom, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE s. BEUcE.
