To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM B. QUICK, citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Coal and Vood Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention has relation to improvements in combined coal and wood boxes; and it consists in the novel details of construction more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the box with top lid thrown open and the lid of the coal bin or compartment partly broken; Fig. 2 is a middle vertical longitudinalsection of the box with lids closed; and Fig. 3 is a top plan, with parts broken away.

The object of my invention is to provide a box for the storing of coal and kindling which shall not only present an attractive appearance, but one in which the compartments for the respective fuels shall be so disposed, that the abstraction of the one will making special provision for the storing of in the dual capacity of a handle for the box and as a support for the shovel and poker; and one possessing further and other advantages better apparent from a detailed description of the invention which is as follows:

Referring to the drawings, B; represents the box as a whole, the same being provided with an upper reduced coal compartment or bin 1 normally closed by a hinged lid 2, and with a bottom enlarged base or wood compartment 1. The latter compartment projects a suitable distance forwardly beyond the front wall of the compartment 1, leaving a passage-way a for the abstraction of the wood '10 from, or its introduction into, the chamber 1. The bottom of the front wall of the chamber 1 is normally closed by a door 3 which is hinged along the front edge of the flanged plate 4 forming the bottom of the chamber 1. When swung upward, the door 3 is held locked by a rotatable latch 5; and when occasion arises to abstract the coal 0 from the chamber 1, the door 3 is dropped in which movement it is arrested by the upper edge of the front extension of the chamber 1, such arrest taking place when the door is on a horizontal (dotted position Fig. 2). The housewife or maid now inserts a shovel 8 along the door 3 thus dropped, into the chamber 1 and scoops out the necessary quantity of the fuel. The door 2 obviously serves the purpose of closing the opening through which the compartment 1 is charged, the coal dropping against a downwardly inclined deflecting plate or wall 6 preferably formed integrally with the front wall of the chamber 1, and directing the coal rearwardly so as to prevent choking of the opening through which the fuel is scooped out for use. The shovel is guided into the opening formed by the dropping of the door 3, by the inclined upper portions of the side walls of the bottom chamber-extension 1. l/Vhen the door 3 is dropped, the same closes the passage-way a, thus preventing any coal from falling into the wood compartment 1. In this position too, the

door forms practically a continuation of the bottom of the coal compartment.

At the upper right hand corner of the compartment l is secured a match-holder or receptacle m formed or stamped out of a single sheet of metal, and provided with terminal flanges n by which it is secured to the two contiguous walls of the chamber. The sides of the box are provided with handle-bars 7 having deflected terminals secured to the box walls whereby the body of the bar is spaced from the outer face of the wall. This allows the handle bar to subserve the additional purpose of supporting the shovel s and poker 7).

Details illustrated but not referred to are well known in the art and require no description in the present connection.

It may be stated in passing that the upper inclined extensions or wings of the side walls of the front extension of the compartment 1, likewise prevent the coal from falling out on the sides as it is being shoveled out of the compartment 1.

Having described my invention what I claim is 1. A combined coal and wood box comprising an upper compartment having a top charging opening for the coal, an inner downwardly inclined deflecting wall projecting from the front wall and dipping toward the bottom of said coal compartment, the latter being provided with a discharge opening in the front wall below the deflector, a bottom wood compartment extended beyond the front wall of the coal compartment and forming a passage-way for the wood, said passage-way being bounded by the side walls, a door hinged along the front edge of the bottom of the coal compartment and, for one position closing the discharge opening from said compartment, and adapted to drop across the upper edge of the front wall of the extension of the bottom compartment and close the passageway thereof aforesaid, the door in its dropped position forming substantially a continuation of the bottom of the coal compartment.

2. A combined coal and wood boX comprising an upper compartment having a top charging opening for the coal, an inner downwardly inclined deflecting wall projecting from the front wall and dipping toward the bottom of said coal compartment, the latter being provided with a discharge opening in the front wall below the deflector, a bottom wood compartment extended beyond the front wall of the coal compartment and forming a passage-way for the wood, said passage-way being bounded by suitable inclined extensions of the side walls, a door hinged along the front edge of the bottom of the coal compartment and for one position closing the discharge opening from said compartment, and adapted to drop across the upper edge of the front wall of the extension of the bottom compartment and close the passage-way thereof aforesaid, the door in its dropped position forming substantially a continuation of the bottom of the coal compartment.
