that they may be placed one upon anothery and still permit the opening of the lid through -which such goods are to be removed without having to in any way displace any of such superposed bins, or in place of employing superposed bins the particular construction will permit of shelves to receive other goods being placed immediately above same, if de sired, without impeding the opening of such bins.

Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a perspective view illustrating two sets or nests of superposed bins constructed according to my invention placed side by side and having ordinary boxes placed on the top of the uppermost bin (but which might be replaced by one or more shelves placed over same) without impeding the opening of the latter. a nest of three superposed bins.

Each bin is in the form of a box A, constructed of sheet metal, wood, or other suitable material and provided in its upper part with a front extension B of greater depth from back to front than the lower part of said box. The fronty Wall of this extension is preferably inclined and'forms in connection with the end walls a kind of chute for the bin. The bin is provided with a flat top D, which corresponds substantially in width with the width of the lower portion of the bin, and to the front edge of such fixed cover the movable lid E,serving to open and close the orifice F in the chute formed by the extension above referred to, is hinged and through which the goods to be stocked in such bin are to be introduced and withdrawn as required. The lower portion of vbody A of Fig. 2 represents anend elevation of the bin (which, as above stated, is of less depth from back to front than the upper portion thereof) is of a height slightly greater than the length of the hinged lid or cover E for closing the opening F in the extended top B, so that when one bin is placed upon the other the cover of the lower one can, as shown at H, be turned back and rest against the front of the reduced lower portion of the body A of the bin next above same, and as such lid is hinged to the fixed top of the bin at a point slightly in advance of the vertical plane occupied by the front face of the reduced portion of the body thereof this will permit of the lid falling slightly back behind the hinge, and thus insure the lid remaining in its open position until is is turned down again.

It will be readily understood that a single bin or a nest of two or more superposed bins of the construction described might, as shown in the drawings, be employed with one or more ordinary boxes or shelves G of a width approximating, but not exceeding,that of the depth of the bottom of the body of the bin from back to front arranged over same and at a height from the top of the uppermost bin less than that of the hinged lid or cover thereof without interfering with the opening or closing of the top bin.

What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A bin for containing goods required to be readily available for removal in fractional portions or quantities, comprising a body whereof the lower part is of less depth from back to front than the upper part, the upper part having an open chute-like front extension and a lid hinged at its inner edge slightly in front of the vertical plane of the front of said lower part and swinging outward to close said chute-like front extension, the height of said lower'part being greater than the length of said lid from the inner to the outer edge thereof.
