MOSES W. COOLBAUGH, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
BIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 5, 1907.
Application filed November 19. 1906. Serial No. 344,057.
To In whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that 1, Moses 7. COOLBA UGI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, Greene county, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing a bin embodying the features of my i11- vention located inside of a casing. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the casing with the front wall of the bin removed. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the bin opened; and Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the bin.
This invention relates to bins for holding flour, sugar, and various other kinds of material.
One object of .my invention is to provide a bin which :is so constructed that when it is pulled out its front end will not drop down and thus displace or shift the material therein.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bin which upon being moved outwardly a short distance will continue to move forwardly gradually in an approximately horizontal plane and come to rest without a sudden shock or jar.
Other desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.
Referring to the drawings, which represent the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates a casing in which the bin is located. Rollers 2 are carried bythe sides 3 of the bin adjacent the upper rear corners thereof, and said rollers are adapted to travel on tracks or supporting members 4, secured to the inner faces of the sides of the casing 1, the casing being also provided with members at, extending parallel to the members 41. At the front of said casing are rollers 5, which are carried by brackets 6, fastened to the inner faces of the sides of the casing, as shown in Fig. 2, and also in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and The sides of the bin are provided with tracks 7, which rest on the rollers 5, and said tracks are preferably of the form shown in Fig. t, wherein it will be seen that the lower edges of the tracks curve upwardly at S and then incline dowmvardly toward. the front ends of the tracks, which are curved upwardly or rounded off at 9.
The tracks 7 are located. adjacent the upper edges of the sides 3 of the bin, and when the bin is closed, as shown in .Fig. 1, the up- \\"&1(ll 011I'\ 'G(l portions 9 at the front ends of the track will rest on the rollers 5, and thus retain the bin in its closed position.
\Vhen the bin is pulled forwardly, the curved portions 9 of the tracks will ride upwardly on the rollers 5 until the deepest portions of said tracks (indicated by the reference character 10) have passed over the said rollers, the upper edges of the sides of the bin being cut away at 11. to permit the front end of the bin to raise slightly. After the deepest portion of said tracks have passed over the rollers 5 the bin will move forwardly gradually and in an approximately horizontal plane, due to the fact that the lower edgesof the track incline downwardly from the curved portion 8 to the point 10, and when said curved portions 8 come into engagement with the rollers 5 the bin will come to rest, the upper edge of the rear end of the bin coming in contact with the member 4, as shown in Fig.
By constructing a bin in this manner there is no liability of the front end of the bin dropping down, and thus shifting or displacing the contents of the bin as the bin moves outwardly in an approximatelyhorizontalplane. Moreover, as the bin comes to rest without a sudden shock or jar there is no danger of wrenching or tearing loose any part of the bin or casing.
If it is desired to remove the bin from the casing, this can be accomplished by simply raising the front end of the bin slightly after the curved portions 8 of the tracks have come in contact with the rollers 5 and then continuing the forward movement of the bin. This also is a very desirable feature of my bin, as it enables the bin to be taken out of the casing without removing any stops or similar devices for determining the position which the bin normally occupies when it is open.
I have herein shown the bin as being provided with a curved bottom 12; but, if desired, it could have a flat or level bottom, as the particular shape or form of the bottom of the bin is immaterial so far as my invention is concerned, as said bottom does not come in contact with any portion of the casing 1.
Preferably the rear ends of the tracks 7 are rabbeted out and the rollers 2 are located in these cut-out portions, so that they will not be liable to be broken off.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a casing provided at its front end with supporting devices, a bin located inside of said casing, and tracks connected to the sides of said bin which rest on the supporting devices of the casing, the lower edges of said tracks being inclined downwardly from a point adjacent their centers to their front ends so that when the bin is pulled forwardly slightly it will gradually move into its open position in an approximately horizontal plane and come to rest without a shock or jar substantially as described.
2. In combination with a casing provided with supports, a bin located inside of said casing and having members at the upper edges of its sides which rest on the supports of the casing, tracks connected to the sides of the bin adjacent the upper edges thereof, and cooperating supporting devices on the casing, the lower edges of said tracks curving upwardly adjacent the middle of the tracks and thence downwardly toward the front ends of the tracks which are curved upwardly so that after the bin has been pulled outwardly a short distance it will move forwardly in an approximately horizontal plane and come to v rest without a shock or ar and when it is pushed inwardly it will be locked in its closed position against accidental displacement;
substantially as described.
3. In combination with a casing provided with supports at its front end, a bin located inside of said casing, tracks connected to the sides of the bin adjacent the upper edges thereof for traveling on said supports, the lower edges of said tracks inclining downwardly from the center toward the end of the tracks and the ends of the tracks being curved upwardly, and means for supporting the rear end of the bin substantially as described.
4. In combination with a casing provided with tracks, a bin located inside of said cas ing, devices connected to the sides of the bin at the upper rear corners thereof for resting on said tracks, supporting members located adjacent the front of the casing, and tracks securedto the sides of the bin adjacent the upper edges thereof for resting on said supporting members, the lower edges of said tracks curving upwardly at approximately the middle of the tracks and thence downwardly toward the front ends of the tracks which are curved upwardly; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 12th day of November, 1906.
MOSES W. COOLBAUGH.
