Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EPHRAIM C. BRETT, OF GREAT BARRINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR OPENING ANI) CLEANING FLOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,404, dated October 7, 1851.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRIAM C. BRETT, of Great Barrington, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have in vented a new and useful Machine for Separating and Cleansing VVoolen Flocks from Sand, Lumps, Hard Substances or Any Foreign Matter; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inachine and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section through the same, the saine letters having reference to like parts in all the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a circular and concave graters between which the ocks is passed and separated and thence passes into a. fan chamber, and is blown out through a conducting spout, while the dirt settles and separates therefrom.
The description is as follows: A is the driving shaft driven by the pulley B upon said shaft is placed a conical grater roller, C inside of the grater case D, one half ot' which is represented open in Fig. l; said grater case is formed of sheet or cast iron or other metal, and lined with a sheet metal grater, thereby making it a close case so as that no dust or bers shall escape out at the sides. The space between the cylinder and case is greater at the top so as to receive the blocks from the hopper E in bunches and separate it in its passage between and from the graters at the bottom into the fan chamber F and is blown out of the spout G, by the fan H while the dirt settles in the bottom of the spout and is let out through an opening which is closed by the slide I. The flocks being thus cleansed and separated is made suitable for being worked into cloth in the operation of ulling, without injury to the same.
Having thus described the nature of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement and combination of the conical revolving grater within the close grater case, combined with the blowers in the manner and for the purpose substantially the same as described and represented.
EPI-IRAIM C. BRETT.
