Description

N. PETERS. PHOTO-UTHQGRAPMER. WASH NGToN n C irma STATES rarer Een. i
JNO. M. EARLS, OF TROY, NEW YORK.`
SMUT-MACI-IINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,904, dated April 27, 1852.
` To all 'whom 'it may concern:
b Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Imw proved Machine for Cleaning Grain; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked there on, viz.:
Figure l is a sectional elevation of the en tire machine. Fig. 2 is a ground plan and elevation of the rubber and ventilator cut through the machine at A, B. a, a, a, a are two sets of spiral arms, one set in the ventilator and the other in the rubber and are made in this form to create a center draft of air for the purpose of driving the chaff and `slnut downward to the discharge spouts.
Fig. 3 is a ground plan and elevation of the scourers, beaters, wings and part of the rubber. The ground plan in this figure is a view of the bottom scourer seen from the lower side. B, B, B, B are four wings eX- -tending from the lower scourer to the rubber. These wings are for the purpose of driving the dust and other light stuff through the small openings in the outside or case. c, c, c, c are the beating forks attached to the scourers. These arefor the purpose of breaking or beating the hulls and such other substances as Vadhere to the berries after having been discharged from the rubber. D D are two Scrapers attached to the under side of the lower scourer. These Scrapers gather the grain as it falls upon the center plate and force it out of the openings in this plate on to the screen aprons.
Fig. 4L is a ground plan and elevation of the blower which runs in the bot-tom. This blower is made very large for the purpose of producing a strong blast which comes in contact with the grain upon the screens. Fig. 5 is a ground plan and elevation of the concave bottom with the top or body of the machine removed so that the screens and aprons can be seen. e, e, are the screens and aprons which are united and fastened inside of the screen chambers and extending upward to the openings in the middle plate.
y The screens do not cover the whole of the screen chamber but an opening is left sufficient to let the grain pass over when it slides lower bearing of the shaft. But
down the chamber and discharges at the bottom of the machine. `f is a bridge pot that the lower end of the shaft runs in. G is the oil pipe which supplies the step with oil from the outside of the machine. The elevation in Fig. 5 shows the bottom cut though at the line I-I H and exhibits the in* s1 e.
Fig. 6 is a ground plan and elevation of one half of the case removed from the machine. z is the journal and oil boX. c', i are the frames which project from the bottom plate and set upon the edge of the screen chambers and form a base for the smut spouts. j, j, are the openings which admit the grain into the machine.` The elevation in this ligure is an insidevview of the case. 7c, k, are a series of circular zigzag grating projections upon the under side of the head plate which works in unison with the rubber which rub and grate the berry before coming in contact with the beating and scouring surfaces.
Fig. 7 is an elevation of `the entire machine with the smut spouts attached. These spouts are provided with openings near the top and a slide for opening or closing the same for the purpose of increasing or diminishing the blast. These smut spouts are shown on Figs. l and 7 and are marked W. The smut chaff and other light stu is blown out, all together, `through the smut spouts fw, fw and the grain passes over the end of the screen e and discharges through the bottom.
Thus having fully described my machine I wish it to be understood that I do not claim as new a perforated case the same having been heretofore in use, neither do I claim a spike rubber nor a ventilator with spiral arms, nor scourers made of sheet or other metal, nor do I claim the oil box at the top of the machine nor the oil pipe for the What I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The projecting screen chambers,in combination with the arrangements for separating the rubbing chamber from the fan chamber, whereby the grain is prevented from being affected by the blast from the fan chamber, while it is passing through the rubbing chamber, and is only brought in contact With the current of air Where it asoende to the soourers, whereby the berries are more take away the oha and. other lmpurities efi'ectually cleaned from adhering impuri- V substantially as herein set forth. ties as herein set forth.
2. I also claim in combination with the JOHN M. EARLS. v 5 scouring surfaces, the beating forks, orvthe Witnesses:
' purpose of beating the grain and breaking E. BELL,
the hulls While falling from the rubber to JOSEPH HYDE.
