FOLDING BED.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANCIS S. 11100, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and tate of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Folding Bed, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that type of bed which may be folded and moved into places of concealment.

It is an object of my invention to provide a bed mounted upon a wheeled carriage in such a manner that it may be caused to assume a position suitable for placing in a closet or other concealing chamber.

It is a further object of my invention to provide a carriage for such a bed which may be economically, yet sturdily constructed.

Other objects and advantages will be made evident hereinafter.

Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only:

Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a bed embodying my invention intended for concealment within an article of furniture, such as a davenport, the bed being shown in entirely folded position ready for concealment.

Fig. 2 is a view, similar to Fig. 1, showing the bed in one of the stages of unfoldment.

Fig. 3 is also a view taken similarly to Fig. i but showing the bed unfolded.

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan View of the bed as shown in Fig. 3.

The bed frame 70, is adapted to be folded in such a manner as to provide an enclosed space 71 in which the mattress is contained and which may be tilted into the position shown in Fig. 1 so that it may be concealed by a davenport. The spring frame is constructed of a pair of longitudinal head bars 7 2, a pair of longitudinal foot bars 73 and link bars 74 joining the bars 72 and 73, these bars preferably being light structure angles. A head spacing angle 75 connects between the ends of the bars 72 and an angle 7 6 connects between the ends of the bars 73, there being provided a U-shaped supporting bar 77 which pivots between the links 74 so that the cross connecting portion 78 will be entirely clear to the spring when the spring is depressed due to weight thereupon. The feature of pivoting the member 77 allows same to be folded back between the links 7 4: and out of the way when the bed is in the position shown in Fig. l. A head frame 80 is pivoted at 81 to upright angles 82 mounted upon the bars 72 at 83 andreinforced by diagonal bars 8 1. Links 85 connect between pivots 86 upon the head frame 80 and link mountings 87 mounted upon cross bars of the carriage 89. In revolving the bed frame upon the pivot 90 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2, the head frame 80 is caused to assume a position perpendicular to the bed frame 70, due to the action there upon of the link 85. From the position shown in Fig. 2 the spring member 7 0 may beunfolded to the position shown in Fig. 3, the foot frame 91 which is mounted upon links 92 and 93 being moved from a closed position between the angles 7 3, through the position indicated-by the dotted line 94, to the upright position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, constituting in this position legs 95 for supporting the foot portion of the bed frame.

Pivoted upon the links 74;, at a point indicated at 96, are placed intermediate supporting legs 97 having links 98 extending between the upwardly projecting portion 99 thereof and the pivot 90 upon which the entire bed frame 7 O swings. In the folding of the bed the links 7 1 turn on the pivot 101, by which they are attached to members 72, from the horizontal position shown in Fig. 3, to an upright position as shown in Fig. 2. As the links 7% swing upward, the pivots 96 are carried into positions closer to the pivot 90, while the pivot 102 is maintained at a given distance from the pivot 90, owing to the link connection 98 therebetween with the result that the end 99 of the leg 97 is moved relatively outward causing the leg 97 to swing into retracted position shown in Fig. 2. WVhen the spring frame 70 is tilted back from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1, the relative position of the legs 97 and the links 98 are not changed as the structure comprising the frame 70 merely revolves around the pivot 90. The action of the link 85 serves to maintain the head frame 80 in a substantially vertical position against the folded members 73, as indicated in dotted lines at 105 in Fig. 1. The construction of the carriage 89 provides end frames 106 having cross bars 104: and 107 thereupon; a tie bar 109 reinforced with diagonal members 110; and supporting column members 111, extending vertically from the tie bar 109t'o 'coact witl i the cross bar 105 in pivotally supporting the bed frame 70.

In a bed, the combination of: bed frame having three portions joined at tWo pivot points; means for supporting said bed frame to form a substantially plane surface upon which a mattress may be placed, said pivots being so placed that said bed frame may be folded so that the two end portions are substantiallyparallel to each other and form an enclosure in which the flmattress may be carried; a head frame pivoted to one of said end portions; pivot bolts forming a partof said supporting means about which said bed frame may be turned in its folded position; and means by Which said head frame assumes a parallel position outside the other of said end portions thus looking it in place as said bed frame is swung about said bolts.
