CHARLES F. PLACKARD; 0F SUMMITVILLE, INDIANA.
BED CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jung 13, 1922,
Application filed December 6, 1920. Serial No. 428,681.
T 0 all 20 from it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLEs F. Prison- Ann, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Summitville, county of Madison, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Bed Construction; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to folding bed construction, and particularly to those which. are not only ornamental but will be useful during the daytime for purposes other than sleeping.
The chief object of this invention is to provide a folding bed construction with suitable means, such that the same is adapted to function'as a table or desk during such times as the bed construction is not desired for use, whereby the combined bed construction may be utilized in the present type of dwellings if desired wherein bed rooms are omitted and a bed construction is provided in the living room or dining room.
The chief feature of the invention consists in providing a foldable bed construction with table or desk-forming means associated therewith such, that the bed construction is adapted to serve as a bed for sleeping purposes when desired and as a desk or table for writing purposes when so desired.
Another feature of the invention consists in. associating the desk or table-forming means with the bed structure in such a manner that the former is adapted to support the latter in the bed-forming position.
Another feature of the invention consists in associating with the bed construction suitable bracing means for supporting the bed structure in the bed-forming position, and if desired, said supporting means is adapted toform a portion of the enclosing casing of the bed structure when the bed is in the closed position.
Other features of the invention consist in the simplification of the parts thereof, and of the simplified arrangement of the several parts.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, Fig. l is a side elevational view of the bed structure in the fold.
ed position and the table or desk-forming means in the table or (leslcforming position. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the bed structure in the bed-forming position and the table or desk-forming means in the bed supporting position. ig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view of the desk-forming means in the desk-forming position.
In the drawings, 1O indicates a suitable casing, which casing or framework may be of box-like form when the bed is formed as an entirety, or said-casing or framework may be skeletonized and built into a suitable recess in a wall of a dwelling, such as an apartment and the like. Associated with the casing or framework 10 and foldable within thesame is a bed structure 11, in cluding a base portion 12. which base portion when the bed structure is in the folded position is adapted to be exposed to close the casing or bed receiving recess.
The means for foldably supporting the bed structure 11 comprises a pair of longitudinally and substantially vertically ex tending supports 13 provided with a suitable slot or groove 14 extendinglongitudi nally thereof to form a trackway. The upper end of the slot 14 terminates 111 an angular recess 15 to form a seat for suitable pin or rod means 16 associated with the bed structure. Fig. 1 illustrates the pin 16 in the base of the track or slot 14, while Fig. 2 illustrates said rod seated in the recess 15 and locked therein by suitable means.
The means for supporting the bed in the bed-forming position comprises a plate portion 17 hingedly supported upon the bed structure 11, and foldably supported thereon as well. Suitable link means, such as a pair of bars 18 are positioned at opposite sides of the bed structure and are hinged at one end to the supporting plate 17 intermediate and preferably equidistant from the ends thereof. The other end of the bar 18 is provided with a universal joint or other suitable joint means, such as the slot 19 and the bead or head 20 which permits the plate 17 to be foldably supported upon the bed structure, and yet when said plate is in the bed supporting position, said brace bars 18 prevent outward movement of said plate. Other means for supporting the bed structure when in the bed-forming position comprises the links or hinge bars 21 plvoted at one end to the base of the casing or frainework 10 and pivoted at the other end to the bed structure at each side thereof. If desired, and preferably the same is constructed such that the numeral indicates a plate portion, which when folded in the position as shown in Fig. 1, is adapted to orm an exposed portion of the casing. Therefore, the element or elements indicated by the numeral 21 in Figs. 1 and 2 is adapted to form a portion of the casing, as well. as a bed-supporting brace, and said.- bed and brace plate may be ornamented as desired to correspond with the remainder of the casing or panel.
The means associated with the bracing means 17 and 21 for maintaining the same in the bracing position when the bed structure is in the bed-forming position comprises a lever .22, which in the present instance is an extension of the lever means 21, or the equivalent thereof. A bar orrod member 23 is provided with a hinged joint associated with the lever 22, and the other end of said bar 23 is hingedly secured to one end of a pivoted lever 24. The lever 24: is pivoted intermediate its ends at 25 upon the bed structure. The free end of said lever is adapted to extend downwardly and is provided with an angular extension 26 which projects outwardly into engagement with the supporting plate 17 to maintain said plate in the bed-supporting position. The bed construction hereinbefore described is shown in the supporting position in Fig. 2 and in the retracted and folded position in Fig. 1, showing that the same is not exposed when the bed is in the folded position.
Reference will now be had to the several figures, and in particular to Fig. 3., wherein the table or desk-forming supporting plate 1 is illustrated in detail in the desk-forming position. Preferably at or near each side of the plate 17 is hinged the link bars 18 hereinbefore described such that the plate '17 is adapted to form a desk or table top. The plate 17, :as shown clearlv in F 3,-is provided with two inwardly turned and angularly extending flanges 27, and the base 12 0f the bed structure 11, as shown clearly in Fig. 3, is provided with the slots 28 and the bracket or lug-forming sockets 29. It will be understood that the sockets 28 and 29 are adapted to receive the flanged ends 27 0f the plate '17 in order to support the plate 17 in either the bracing and bed-formring position, or the deskor table top-forming position.
The hinged construction shown in Fig. 2 designated the numerals 2-1, 22, 23, 17 :and "24: [is provided such that the bed when in the folded position. will anove outwardly from the casing and lock the pin means or r the rod 16 in theseat 15 formed by the angular recess communicating with the longitudinal slot 14:.
It will be readily understood from the description and drawings that the plate 17 may be formed of any suitable material and may be ornamented as desired such that the same will correspond with the remainder of the bed-forming structure, and it will be further noted that the base 12 of the bed structure may be similarly and suitably or namented to correspond with the other exposed portions, to-wit, the desk-forming plate and the bracing plate 21 if the same is constructed a plate. 7 1
While the invention has been described in great detail and several modifications have been suggested, it will be readily apparent that other modifications will also suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which this invention applies, and all. such modifications as well as those disclosed herein, are considered to be within the broad purview of this invention, as outlined by the appended claims.
The invention claimed is:
1. In a bed construction, the combination with a supporting framework, and .a bed structure foldably supported upon said framework, of .a desk plate adapted to support the extended portion of said bedstructure in the bed-forming position and movable therewith, and means for supporting said pl ate upon the bed structure, said means per- 7 mitting said plate to be moved into the closed position and to the adesk-fonming position intermediate the ends of the bed when said bed structure is in folded relation with said framework, and said means further supporting said desk plate near the end of the bed in the bed supporting position when said bed is in the bed-forming position.
2. In a bed construction, the combination with a supporting framework, and .a' bed structin-e foldably supported upon said framework, of a :desk plate \movably supported intermediate its ends, and aneans upon said bed structure supporting said desk plate and adapted to brace the desk p'late,.so that the latter may act asa support for the bed when in unfolded and bed-forming position, said plate upon one end and bed structure near the extended end having complementary means for securing the plate to the bed in folded relation, and said plate upon its other end and said bed structure inteumediate its ends having complementary means adapted to secure the plate in the adeslcfonming position.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed any signature.
