Description

Jan. 19, 1932. A. s. THOMPSON AiOldDINC BED AND TABLE STRUCTURE Filed June 27, 1951 gva/manto@ Agn/ae 6, Zim/mwN Patented Jan. 19, 1932 PATENT OFFICE .ARTHUR S. THOMPSON, OF ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA FOLDING :BED AND Application filed .Tune 27,
invention relates to improvements in folding bed and table structures, and while not limited in its use or application, is particularly designed for employment in connection with a motor vehicle for which application for-patent was filed March 13, 1930, Serial No. 435,534, as it serves in a most pra" tical manner with the vehicle body covered by said application for patent.
One object of my invention is the provision of a folding bed structure which will when not in use occupy a very small space and be capable of fitting in longitudinal compartments provided in said vehicle and which can be instantly adjusted for use to provide a most comfort-able bed.
Another object of my invention is the pro vision of a folding bed structure which can be instantly set up for use as a bed and as quickly folded and stored out of the way, and which in addition will have a folding table structure which will provide a perfect table, thus making the structure perform the two functions of a folding bed and table.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a folding bed and table combination structure which will be comparatively light in weight to be easily handled; which will be simple, strong and durable to withstand hard usage; which will not detract from the appearance of the vehicle; which will be cheap to produce and which generally will possess every requisite to produce a practical and efficient invention of this character.
VVtl'i these objects in view my invention Y consists of a folding bed and table struct-ure embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as described and claimed and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 represents a transverse sectional view of my vehicle body showing the folding bed and table in end elevation and folded and showing in dotted lines the position the parts TABLE STRUCTURE 1931. Serial No. 547,359.
occupy when used as a bed, or in open condition.
Figure 2 represents a similar view showing the parts in the position they assume when the table is in position for use. Y
Figure 3 represents a detail sectional view, and
Figure 4 represents a perspective view on an enlarged scale showing the parts in position to form a table in full lines, and showing the movable section open to form the bed in dotted lin-es, the view showing the construction and both functions of the invention.
` I have shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings the vehicle body ofmy pending application to which reference has been made, as the structureis `designed for use in connection with said vehicle, and briefly the vehicle consists of the floor 1. the lower or hase panels 2, the upper body structure 3 of reduced width, having windows 4, the rigid bed structure 5, mounted in the top of the body structure 3, the roof structure 6, the wings 7 depending from said roofv structure and having windows 8, which may align with the windows of the upper body structure, or may be raised to be above the bed structure and form a sleeping compartment The construction described and as shown in the drawings provides at each side of the vehicle the longitudinal conpartments or spaces 9, and these serve to receive and store my folding bed and table structure when notl in use, as will presently appear.
The 'folding bed and table structure which forms the present invention, comprises the rigid member or section 10, and the hinged member or section 10', each having the'inclined abutting corners 12 and 12', the rim 13 and 13', which form the recess or chamber 14, to receive the mattress 15, made of twin sections, and the `rigid section is provided with legs or supports 16, which firmly support the structure on the floor of the vehicle, while the hinged section has the keepers 17,
which as shown in Figure 1 receive the latches 18, to secure the hinged section in raised or folded form.
From Jthis construction it will be noted that the structure is composed of twin members one of which is rigid and the other hinged to be raised and lowered and that When the structure is out of use the parts are in the full line position shown in Figure 1, and When open or extended for use the hinged section assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, and hinged to the movable section at 19, is the table leaf 20, which at its ends on the underface is provided with the pivoted plates which when the table is in use as shoivn in Figures 2 and 3, rests upon the upper edge of the legs 21, having the floor engaging feet 21', and said legs 21, have pivoted thereto at their upper ends 23, the braces 24;, which as shown in Figure 4l, engage notches or recesses 25, in the plates 25, acting to retain the table leaf in raised position for use.
From this construction it is evident that the bed or table may be instantly provided as found necessary, and the legs 21, are pivoted at 26, upon the pin or stud 27, which is secured in the rim at the ends of the hinged sect-ion, as shown in Figure 3, and upon the outer threaded end 28, of said pins fit the adjusting nut 29, and between the nut and pivot of the legs is placed the coiled tension springs 30, which act to hold the legs in proper adjusted position.
In accordance with my improvements it Will be at once evident that a folding bed and table structure is provided which when out of use is folded Within the chambers at the side of the body, which can be quickly opened to form a complete comfortable bed, which can be adjusted to form a table of ample size. and that generally the invention possesses the requisites to provide a most useful, efficient and practical structure for the purpose.
I claim:
l. In combination with a vehicle body having a longitudinal compartment at an outer side thereof, a folding bed structure extending Within said compartment, said folding bed structure, comprising an inner section, supporting means carried by said inner section, an outer hinged section, a leaf hinged to said outer section, legs pivoted to said outer section to support said section When open to form a bed, means to support said legs when raised, and means carried by said leaf for engaging said legs when raised to support said leaf to provide a table.
2. A folding structure of the character described, comprising an inner section, an outer hinged section, a leaf hinged to the outer section to form a table, legs pivoted to said outer section to support said section When open to form a bed, means to support the legs When raised, and means carried by said leaf for engaging said legs When raised to support said leaf to provide a table.
3. A folding structure of the character described, comprising twin sections, a table forming, leaf on one of said sections, means hingedly connecting the leaf to said section, pivoted legs on one of said sections, braces carried by the legs and engaging said section to retain the legs in raised position and pivoted plates on said leaf to engage said legs When the leaf is raised to form a table.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ARTHUR S. THOMPSON.
