Description

Y' Nov. 1930. l F. M. OVERBEY mum;
Filed Jan. 25. 1929 Patented Nov. 25, 1930 FLOYD M. OVERBEY, or LEAVENWORTH, 'anaivsns'` `j Application. ined January 25, 1929. Seriana-335,066.
This invention relates to an'article of furniture of the nature of a chair, or settee,` and provides a device of thisnaturejwhich is both convertible and foldable and adapted for use with or without rockers,.and which `may be reduced to compact form for convenience of handling and storing.`
While thedrawing illustrates apreferred' embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that inadapting the means to meet r speciiic'needs and requirements, the design and the' merits thereof, reference is to be hadV may be varied and vsuch other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as` fclaimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.` s i l Fora full understanding of the invention to the following description and the drawing hereto attached," in which l Figure 1 is av perspective View illustrating an embodiment of the invention and showing the article as it appears when adjusted foruse. i
Figure `2 is a folded. i Y
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sec tional View of a rocker and the member pivoted thereto. i
Figure l is an enlarged detail sectional View of, a portion of the rocker and the member having interengaging connection therewith. y
` Corresponding and like parts are referred to in thefollowing descriptionand designated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The chair or analogous article comprises members 1 and 2 which cross andare pivotal- `ly connected at the point of crossing, as inside view showing the chair i dicated at 3. There are ytwo sets of members 1 and 2. which are transversely spaced apart a distance corresponding to the width or length of the article. TheV members 1 are approximately double thev length ofthe members 2 and .form elements of the back. An upper cross member 4, a lower cross member 5 and intermediate cross members 6 and 7 connect the side members 1. vRods 8.
back. Arms 9 are pivoted at their rear ends tothe side members 1 and are supported in horizontal position by l:means of braces 10. A strip 11 dependsfrom each of the arms 9 and has alongitudinalslot 12 formed thereinto receive-the'fastenings `13 by means of ably connected with the arms to admitof the compact folding of the structure, as. indin catediinost olearlyin Figure `2,05. the draw# l seat llris pivotally connected adjacent its forward edge with the upper ends of the members 2, as indicated at 15. The rear portion of the seat llis slidably connected with the sidemembers 1.
whichLupper ends ofthe bracesvlO are slid- A groovelG is formed in the inner side of each of themembers 1 and receives a pin or other element projecting laterally from the rear portion of the seat. y
Rockers 17 are Vprovided and' aredetachably fitted to the lower ends of the members 1 and 2, thereby admittingof the article be`` Y ing used with or without rockers as required.
The lower ends of the members 1 and2 are received in mortises formed in the top side of the` rockers 17. Screws or like fastenings 18 pivotally and detachably connect the members 1 with the rockers 17, Plates 19 ap,- plied to vopposite sides'oithe rockers 17 re-l inforce and strengthenthe same opposite` the mortises'providedto receive the lower ends of the members 1. The lower fend of each of the members 2 is offset to form a `shoulder 20 which engages under the metal strap 21 extending over and along opposite sides ofthe rocker 17 adjacent the mortise formed therein to receive the lower end of the member 2. The lowerend of each of the members 2 is reinforced by a metal strap 22.
lVhen the chair is setup for `usethe shoulders 20 of the members 2 engage under the overhanging portion of the strap21 thereby7 retaining the. parts in position. Vhen foldfV ing the chair the rear end of. the seat ll isA movedv upwardly. Thisresults in a pivotal movement of the `members 2 which withdraws their lower ends from engagement with the overhanging portions of the strap 21, thereby admittingof the folding of the chair in the manner substantially as indicated in Figure 2 of the drawing, whereby it occupies a minimum space for convenience of handling and storing.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:-
A chair or analogous article ofurniture comprising side memberscrossingand pivotally connected at the point of..cr,ossing, ,to the rear members beingextended to form supporting elements for the back andl having longitudinally disposed grooves in their inner sides, a seat pivotally connected to the upper ends of the front members and slid- LE ably connected with the upper portion of the rear members through the in struinentality oit the `grooves thereof, arms pivoted attheir rear ends to the upper portions orf-the rear members, longitudinally slotted strips de- 2@ pending from the `arms and braces pivoted at theirlo-wer ends to the lowerendsof the rear ineinbers and slidably connected at their upper ends'toVl the strips depending from the arms.
Intestimony whereof I aHiX mysignature.
