Description

J. J. TYER METHOD FOR MAKING BOXES Filed June 6, 19 25 gwumioz wmzg w T E N JOHN J. TYER, OF GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA.
METHOD FOR MAKING BOXES.
Application filed June 6, 1923. Serial No. 643,656.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN J. TYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods for Making Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in boxes and methods for making the same and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved box of this general character comprising a box bottom part having a hinged box cover part associated therewith together with means associated with both of said parts for lifting the contents of the box bottom part upon movement of the box cover part into open position.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved box of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with cigarettes or the like and wherein a web or strip is provided for lifting the contents of the box bottom part when the box cover part is raised or lifted into open position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved box whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use. as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective illustrating a box and the method of making the same in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective with a portion broken away of a box constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the box cover part being shown raised and showing the position of the lifting web or strip;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a box constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention with the box cover part closed.
As herein disclosed the box is produced in substantially the same manner as particularly set forth in my pending application Serial No. 621,025 filed February 24, 1923 wherein the box bottom part or sheet 1, the box cover part or sheet 2 and the side strips 3 and 4 are formed about the core U and maintained in assembled relation through the medium of the strip 5 of box trimming paper or binding part. This strip 5 has adhesive applied to a face thereof whereby the same may be conveniently and effectively applied.
In producing the box the lifting web or strip 6 is disposed between the core C and the sheetor box bottom part 1 with an ex.- tremity of said strip or web extending be yond an end of the sheet or part 1, said strip being also disposed over the end wall of the core 0 at the opposite end of said sheet or part 1 and having its extremity overlying the adjacent end portion of the top box part or sheet 2 so that when the strip 5 is applied the extremities of the 6 will be effectively anchored. When the strip 5 and outer strip 4 are severed to provide the box bottom and box cover, it is to be noted that the strip or web 6 is secured cover at the opposite end. This end portion of the box cover is hingedly connected to the box bottom, in the completed box, so
web or strip to the box bottom at one end and to the box 3 that when the box cover is swung into open position as illustrated in Figure 2 the'con tents of the box bottom will be lifted or raised so that the same may be readily and conveniently removed. This form of box is especially adapted for use in connection with cigarettes or kindred commodities.
.From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a box constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A method of making a box consisting in g menses disposing a lifting web partially around. a tisposed over the overlying portions of the 10 core, forming a hollow member about the web to anchor the extremities of the web core, one extremity of the web overlying one and making an incision through the binding end portion of the box bottom part and its strip and certain of the box parts to sep- 5 opposite extremity overlying the opposite arate the hollow member.
end portion of the box cover top part, apply- In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my ing a single adhesive strip around the sides signature.
of the hollow member and engaged with the box cover part and the box bottom part and JNO J. TYER.
