COMBINATION COMMODE SEAT.

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER B. h/l'rorrlci., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Commode Seat, of which the following' is a specication.

My invention relates to an improved seat for commodes and has for its principle object to provide a two in one seat arrangement so that the commode may be made to conveniently accommodate adults and children without necessitating using the usual childrens attachments.

In its preferred form the invention contemplates the use of a secondary seat device for use in combination with the ordinary seat and with the combination so arranged as to leave either seat capable of being used as occasion demands.

The invention will now be described with reference to the illustrative embodiment as shown in the accompanying drawing. In said drawing Figure 1 is a view in plan showing the application of the invention; Figure 2 is a cross section on the line II-II of Figure l; Figure 3 is a detail view in section of one part of the arrangement showing the catch in detail and Figure A is a detail perspective view of the T-headed catch spindle.

Referring now to the drawing' in detail A represents the bowl of an ordinary7 conimode and B the existing seat therefor. As is customary the seat B is pivotally mounted to a pint-le or the like C by the straps D so that it may be swung to and from the opening in the bowl A. instead of the usual cover for the seat l propose to provide a hollow cover case (5) pivotally iixed to the pintle C by straps The cover case (5) is made to receive the secondary seat (7) which is shaped like the seat B but smaller so that it may accommodate children. This seat (7) is pivoted to the pintle C by straps (8) so that it may swing to and from t-he opening in the commode either with or independently of the other seat and cover case. The separate pivotal connections for each of the three pieces enables them to be moved collectively or separately.

The seat (7) as above stated is made to snugly tit within the cover case and in order to leave the seat B exposed for use a Catch (9) is carried by the cover case to Serial No. 632,433.

This catch is so constructed that the seat (7) may be easily released for use and in this respect the catch comprises a spindle (10) having' a T-head adapted to be received in a recess (11) in the top of the seat The opening (1.2) into the recess through the plate (13) is shaped to conform with the T-head so that the T-head may be projected into the recess and then turned to contine the same against withdrawal until it has been turned to again register with the opening'. The shank of the spindle extends through a ferrule (14) and then through a knob The knob is made with an internal recess to conine a spring (16) coile'l around the shank. The extremity of the shank is threaded through an opening in the top of the knob and the spring bears against the top of the recess and the bottom of the ferrule so that it may impose an upward thrust to the spindle and hold the T-head in the recess by a slight frictional contact. To release the T-head from the recess the knob is turned, which likewise turns the T-head, and as soon as it registers with the opening into the recess the spring lifts it through, thus releasing' the seat (7) from the cover case, The action of the catch when influenced by the springs makes it very simple to manipulate and leaves it thus easy for a child to actuate the same.

From the above it will be readily seen that while I have added a very desirablel improvement. to the commode, have in no way departed from the conventional appearu ance of the same or otherwise changed the existing seat to an extent that the combination will incoi'ivenience the use of the commode.

The simplicity of the combination offers many possibilities from a profitable cominercial point of view, especially since the use of the same may be expected to include commodes for not only households but for public convenience stations, and all other places where commodes will be used by adults and children.

l claim:

1. ln a commode, a pair of superimposed seats having openings of ditlerent dimensions7 and a cover therefore, each of said seats and the cover having a separate pivotal mounting on a common pintle secured to the commode, and means accessible on top of the cover for detachably connecting the cover to its adjacent seat.

2. In a commode, a pair of superimposed seats having openings of dierent dimensions, and a Cover therefore, each of said l Seats and the cover having a separate pivotal mounting on a common pintle secured to the commode, and a revolvable knob on 10 the top of the cover` having a catch adapted for connecting the cover to its adjacent seat.
