Description

Patented Dec. 29, "i925,
HERBERT A. BEARD, OF ROCEESTER, NEIN HAMPSHIRE.
PORTABLE TOILET.
Application filed October 27, 19211.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be itknown that I, Hnnnnirr A. Brano, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Rochester, in the county ot Stratford and State oit `Blew Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in vPortable '.loilets, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to portable toilets tor use by campers, automobile tourists, and the like.
An object oitl the invention is the provision of a device ot'this character, which may be compactly folded and transported in a motor vehicle.
A further Objectis the provision of a device that may be assembled without the use of independent supports, such as trees, fence posts or the like.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view orn the entire device,
Figure 2 is al plan view of the seat,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure l is a detail sectional view on line tt of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a similar view on line 5-5 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a horizontal sectional view on line 6--6 of Figure 3, and,
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a portion of the seat, inverted.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a plate or supporting member preferably made of metal or other suitable material and provided with a central opening 2. In this instance, I have shown a supporting member having a straight rea-r edge 3 and curved side and front edges 4. The particular shape of the plate, however, is immaterial. As shown, the portion of the plate surrounding the opening is rolled as at 5, providing a depending tlange. The outer edge is also rolled to provide a iiange 6.
The seat which may be supported by any number of legs, and in this instance, I have shown three legs, pivotally connected 4to the seat to permit folding. At suitable intervals, the ange 6 is cut away, providing a pair ot' parallel members 7 (see Figures 5 and 7) adapted to receive a pivot pin 8.
Serial No. 746,207.
Legs 9 are mounted on these pivot pins and the legs are substantially U-shaped in horizontal cross section, as shown in Figure 6 of the drawings. The top of the leg is provided with an extension 10, adapted to aline with the upper surface ot the scat when thc leg is in operative position. its shown, the leg inclines outwardly and its outward movement is limited by a pin 11, mounted in suitable openings 12 in the extension 7. To prevent accidental release oi the leg, a catch 13 is pivoted thereto and is adapted to engage the pin 11. rIhis catch is normally held in operative position by means ot a spring 14. As shown, the bottoms ot the legs are closed by plates 15, to prevent them from sinking into the ground when the device is assembled. A covering of felt or other suitable material may be arranged over the seat, as indicated at 16. The edges oi' this material entend over the flange 6, and are secured thereto by means of suitable laces or tie strings 17, which pass through openings 18 in the flange.
In connection with the device, I provide a toldable curtain consisting of rectangular sections 19 having stilening members or wire or other suitable material arranged in their edges, as at 20. This curtain is adapted to be arranged around the device, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, and when the device is to be transported, the curtain may be folded in any suitable manner.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. In a device ot the character described, a seat member having a substantially central opening, said member being provided with a peripheral flange. said flange being extended inwardly at intervals to form spaced parallel members, legs arranged between said parallel members and pivotally connected thereto, and means for locking said legs in operative position.
2. A device constructed in accordance with claim l wherein said pivoted legs are inclined outwardly when in operative position,
and a pin is arranged between said parallel members and adapted t be engaged by the adjacent leg to limit the outward movement of the leg.
3. n a device of the character described, a seat member having a Substantially Ycentral opening and provided with an integral depending peripheral flange, said flange being extended inwardly at intervals to form pairs of spaced parallel members, said seat member being cut out between the parallel members of each pair, a pivot pin connected between the parallel members of each pair belowk the top of said seat member, and a leg arranged between each pair of parallel members and pivotally connected to said pin, each of said legs being provided with an offset portion in alinement with the top of said seat member and adapted to engage the edge thereof at the'inner limit of said cutout portion to limit the outward movement of the lower end of the leg.v
1l. ln a device of the character described, a seat member having a substantially central opening and provided with an integral depending peripheral flange, said flange being extended inwardly at intervals to form pairs of spaced parallel members, said seat member being cut out between the parallel members of each pair, a pivot pin connected between the parallel members of each pair below the top of said seat member, a leg arranged between each pair of parallel members and pivotally connected to'said pin, each of said legs being provided with an offset portion in alinement with the top of said seat member and adapted to engage the edge thereof at the inner limit of said cutout portion to limit the outward movement of the lower end of the leg, and a pin connected between the parallel members of each pair and adapted to contact with said leg when the lower end of the latter is arranged in its open position, said pin being arranged below said pivot pin.
In testimony whereof, I afHX my signature.
