Be 1t known that l, FELIX G. Karmann, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Chairs, of ywhich the following is a specilication.

This invention relates to an improved convertible chair, lthe object of the invention being to provide an article of this character which, while capable of use as an ordinary chair, can be readily converted into a commode, and especially a commode for the use of children.v

lWith the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the` novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be more fully. described hereinafter and particularly pointed out i the claims. y

The same characters of reference designate the same parts in the different figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a chair, the frame of which may be of any ordinary construction. The chair is provided With a removable bottom 2, which may be either solid or cane seated as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said bottom being hinged, as

shown at 3, to the underside of the rear frame member 4f of the chair, as shown in Fig. 2. For securing the chair bottom 2 in its seat-forming position, a vspring latch 5 is provided, preferably of U-shape as shown in Fig. 3, so as to a'ord support for the chair bottom at two points. The latch is secured to the underside of the front member 6 of the frame of the chair by means of a pair of staples or eye bolts 7, one leg of the latch passing through each eye and the latch being normally maintained in protracted or latching position by means of a air of coil springs 8, one encircling each eg and placed under tension between the eye bolt and a collar 9 secured on the ieg of the latch. A hook 10 is formed on the connecting member between the latch legs, for permitting withdrawal of the latch thereby to release the chair bottom and allow it to swing into the position shown in Fig.

In the present instance a supplemental bottom or commode-forming member 11 is provided, having the usual central opening 12 of a size adapted to comfortably fit the body of the user. A pair of brackets are secured to the underside of this supplemental bottom one at the front and the other at the rear end of the central opening, said brackets being rabbeted, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to form a guideway for the flange at the upper end of a vessel 14, a similarly-rabbeted member 15 being also secured to the underside of the commode seat to prevent the vessel from passing out of alinement with the opening 12.

When the chair is to be used as a commode, the chair bottom is released from the position shown in Fig. 1 and permitted to swing into the position shown in Fig. 2, whereuponthe commode seat is placed in the opening in the frame, with its rear end resting on what is now the upper edge of the chair bottom and its front end on the legs of the latch The vessel can then be readily placed with. its flange in the guide grooves formed by the brackets 13 and slid under the commode seat until its strikes the stop 15. After the vessel has been used, it is withdrawn, the commode seat removed and the chair botto; swung back into place and the latch released so as to slide thereunder and retain it in chair-forming position.

Vhile l have described in detail the structure herein illustrated it is to be understood that l do not thereby limit my invention to the precise features of construction shown. as I am aware that many mechanical changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims appended hereto.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:
