Description

Deb. 23, 1924.
c. 5; WHIT SAFETY NAPKIN CLIP Filed as, 26, 1923 Patented Dec. 23, 1924 UNIT CHAR-LES SYDNEY WHITE, OF MAR'I'ON, NEW ZEALAND.
SAFETY NAPKIN CLIP.
Application filed. February 26, 1923. Serial No. 621,141.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SYDNEY lVHI'lE, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 8 Hunia Street, Marton, Dominion of New Zealand, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Napkin Clips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved construction of clip device that has been designed for use specially in securing babies napkins in position, but which can, of course, also be otherwise used.
The clip designed, by its construction, privides for the ends of a napkin after being folded in the usual way, being clipped and held tightly in attachment to a girdle or undergarmentso that the napkin will be sustained in its proper position. It also dispenses with the use of the ordinary safety pins and like fastenings with all their dan gers and disadvantages.
The invention consists in a special con-' struction of spring clip device, operable by the well known cam action principle, that is adapted for the particular purpose indicated.
This device is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan, and Figure 2 a side elevation thereof. According to my invention, the clip proper is formed in a well known manner by a single length of springy metal doubled over so that its two ends are brought into parallel lines, one above the other, forming the jaws A and B. These are normally spread apart by the tension of the metal. The lower jaw B, at its edges, is formed with the upwardly extending lugs C that pass up on the respective sides of the upper jaw A and then form bearings in which the cam device D is journalled. This cam is made in one with a handle E, so disposed to it that when the handle is turned down flat on to the jaw A, the cam will engage such jaw and force it down on to the lower jaw and retain it in engagement by passing over the cams throw, and when the handle is turned up, the jaw will be freed so that space formed by the eye F of the lower jaw,
when the two jaws are brought together.
This manner of constructlng these aws provides for a broad grip being exerted upon the folds of the napkins placed between them and for the folds being held firmly by the forcing of the cloth into bends between the bar G and eye F.
To further adapt the cli for the purpose indicated the clip is attac ed by sewing to a piece H of a suitably stiff fabric material that underlies the lower jaw B. To enable this to be done, such jaw is made with small holes 6 along its edges and the threads are passed through these and over the edges of the eye F. This sheet of fabric material is then used for the attachment of the clip to an undergarment or body bandage for convenience in its use, or if desired, it may be left loose.
I claim In a clip, the combination with a pair of spring jaws, of an elongated eye portion extending from the end of one of the said jaws at right angles thereto and projecting on both sides of said jaw, an elongated. bar extending from the end of the other jaw at right angles thereto and projecting on both sides of the said other jaw and adapted to engage in the said elongated eye portion, and a cam handle pivoted to the first mentioned jaw so as to force the said elongated bar into the said eye portion on the closing of the said jaws.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
CHARLES SYDNEY WHITE.
