Be it known that we, MATHEW J. BURKEL and Louis P. FosNoT, citizens of the United States, and residents of Aurora, county of Kane, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in- Valve-Spring-Lifting Devices; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to thc letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication. I
This invention relates to improvements in valve spring lifting devices and consists of the matters hereinafter described and4 more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
This invention relates especially to a valve lifting tool of the type shown in an application, No. 483,685, filed by us on July 11, 1921. The object of the present invention is to further improve and simplify a tool of the kind, whereby its manufacture and assembly is simplified; its efficiency is increased; and whereby the opening movement of the jaws may be arrested at variable distances between them and the jaws will become automatically locked in position and yet will be capable of instant and easy release when the work on the valve is completed.
The novel tool is of simple and economical construction and may be made of stamped parts which are quickly and easily assembled. The many advantages of the improved tool will appear as we proceed with our specification.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a view representing the improved valve spring lifting device in side elevation with the jaws in approximately closed relation.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device.

The tool comprises in general two hand lever members pivoted together and adapted to be operated by one hand in the manner of the ordinary pliers; a pair of opposed jaw members; each carried by and operated by one of the hand lever members, means car ried by each hand lever member and connected to its associated jaw member for maintaining the jaws at all times in parallel relation; and a trigger-controlled, automatic locking mechanism adapted to lock the jaw members against closing movement at a plurality of variable distances apart.
Referring now to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings 10--10 indicate the opposed jaw members, each provided with a bifurcated jaw 11 adapted to embrace the valve stem and having a flat part 12 for engagement beneath the valve spring, with an approximately semi-circular upright shoulder 13 spaced back from the edge of the flat lpart for embracing the peripheral body of the spring.
The body ltof each jaw member is a straight, hollow bar, as shown, with upright, longitudinally extending side anges 15. The jaw member 11 preferably extends laterally at an angle to the length of the body 14, so that the tool may be inserted for engagement with the valve spring at one side and back of any obstruction that may interferewith direct access. The jaw members, when made as shown, may be fabricated from the same blanks t-two forming dies, however, are required.
16-16 indicate two hand lever members which are similar in form to the hand levers of a pair of pliers. Each leverv is a flanged hollow bar'` comprising a main web 16a and depending side flanges 16".- Said flanges 16b are provided near the forward ends of the levers, with fulcrum 'parts 17-17 which extend some distance away from the web member 16a, and which are connected together by a horizontal fulcrumpin or rivet 18. Each jaw member 10 is connected intermediate its ends, by ahorizontal pin 19 to the forward end of its associated hand lever member,-this construction permitting the jaw members to swing on the hand lever members so as to be caused to maintain a parallel relation no matter how the hand lever members are swung, the one upon the other.
To maintain the said parallel relation of the jaw members there are provided two light, bell-crank levers -20, each pivoted by a horizontal pin 2l to one of the hand lever members and connected by a horizontal pin and slot connection at 22 to the rear end of the jaw member carried by the said hand lever member. The bell-crank levers themselves are fulcrumed together on a horizontal pin 23 at a point midway between the two hand lever members and at the rear of the fulcrum pin 18 of said lever. ll/lanifestly, when the hand lever members are swung towards or away from each other, the bell-crank levers 20H20 will maintain the jaw members in parallel relation, the fulcrum pin 23 of said levers moving towards or away from the fulcrum pin 18 of the lever, depending on the way said hand levers are swung and the forward end of said bell-crank levers swinging` on their pin and slot connection with the jaw members.
ln order to lock the jaw members at different distances apart, as the hand lever members are operated to swing them apart, there are provided two engaging latch members, namely, a fixed latch member 24 and a pivoted latch member 25. The fixed latch member 24 is attached to one hand lever member and is provided with ratchet teeth 24a. The pivoted latch member is carried by the other hand lever. lt is pivoted at 26 to and between the flanges 16b of said hand lever and is provided with one or more teeth a adapted to engage the ratchet teeth 24a. The teeth are suitably inclined so that the teeth of the pivoted latch member or trigger will slide over the ratchet teeth 2st as the levers are operated to open the jaws of the teeth. A spring 27 maintains the trigger in engagement with the ratchet. rlfhe trigger has a heel 28, which projects through a slot 29 in the main web 16a of the associated hand lever member and is there provided with a linger piece or end to be engaged by the thumb or linger to release the trigger when it is desired to close the jaws together.
To partially close in the lratchet teeth of the latch mechanism and to protect and prevent the lingers of the operator from being caught or engaged therein, we preferably provide plates 30-30 (see Figs. l and 6) which are placed on opposite sides of the space occupied by said latch mechanism. Said plates are secured in place by the bolt or .rivet 23, which is the fulcrum of the levers 20-20, and have their forward ends slotted as indicated at 30a so that they may engage on the fulcrum bolt or pin 18 of the hand levers,-the slots in the ends permitting the necessary movement of said plates as they move with the fulcrum pin 23 of the hand levers, as heretofore described.
Since the tappets vary in diameter in different engines, we provide al bit 32 adapted to be used with the one of the jaw members which is brought into contact with the tappet. Such a bit is shown in plan view in Fig. 7. lt consists of a flat plate cut 'to provide a narrow bar or stem 33 of the width between the side flanges of the hand lever members and of a head 34 extending at the same angle to said narrow bar or stem as the jaws ll extend to the length of the members l0. The head 34fis bifurcated in like manner to the flat part ll of the jaw member, as indicated at 35. The bit has a notch or opening 36 which is narrower than that of the jaw member. l/Vhen the notch of the jaw member is too large to engage a part of the tappet, the bit 32 is inserted above the pin 19 and below the horizontal web l2 of the jaw member, with the head 2A below the jaw proper. The advantages of such a bit will be apparent.
The operation of the device is manifest from the foregoing description.
While in describing the invention we have referred to certain details of mechanical construction and arrangement of parts, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto except as may be pointed out in the appended claims.
`We claim as our invention:
l. A valve spring lifting device, comprising two parallel jaw members, hand levers fulcrumed together between the said jaw members, and having short arms operatively connected to the front `ends of said jaw members, and auxiliary levers fulcrumed to each other intermediate their ends, each of said auxiliary levers having pivotal connection at one end with a hand lever and a pin and slot connection with the jaw member carried by said hand lever.
2. A valve spring lifting device, comprising two parallel jaw members, hand levers fulcrumed together' between and near the rear ends of said jaw members, and having short arms connected to the front ends of said jaw men'ibers, and bell-crank levers fulcrumed together' at a point baclr of the fulcrum of said hand levers, each bell-crank lever having pivotal connection with a hand lever at its rear end and, at its forward end, a pin and slot connection with the rear end of the jaw member carried by said hand lever.
3. A valve spring lifting device, comprising jaw members, hand levers carrying said jaw members, and bell-crank levers fulcrumed to each other and each operatively connecting a hand lever with a jaw member carried thereby, each jaw member being a flanged bar having a bifurcated jaw formed at one end and each hand lever being a lianged bar embracing its jaw member and associated bell-crank lever, the flanges of the jaw members extending in the opposite direction to the flanges of the hand levers.
4. A valve spring lifting device, comprising hand levers carrying said jaw members, and bell-crank levers operatively connecting said jaw members and hand levers to maintain the jaw members in parallel relation, the jaw members and hand levers being flanged bars and the bell-crank levers being flat bars, the flanges of each hand lever embracing its associated jaw member, a rack bar fixed to one hand lever and eX- tending towards the other hand lever, and a spring controlled trigger pivoted to said other hand lever normally engaged with said rack bar and having a heel which projects through an opening provided in said last named hand lever.
5. ln combination with a valve spring lifting device, including a jaw member having a bifurcated jaw, a bit having a similar, bifurcated head but of different size, adapted to be removably engaged below said jaw.
6. ln combination with a valve spring lifting device, including a hand lever, a
jaw member having a bifurcated jaw, a pin pivotally connecting said jaw member and said hand lever', and a bit having a similar bifureated head of' a different size and a stem adapted to be removably engaged between said pivot pin and said jaw member.
7. A valve spring lifting device, comprising jaw members, hand levers carrying said jaw members, and bell-crank levers fulcrnmed to each other and each operatively connecting a hand lever with a jaw member carried thereby. 4
