No. 226.490. Patented April 13,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH CALEF, Ol NORTH EAS'IOX, MASS., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF VlllS iltll'l TO AUSTIN DEMMONS CABLE, OF MONTREAL, CANADA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application tiled To It -zr/iom vit may concern:
le ir. known ttiathJosrau WARREN Gamen, ot'North Easton, in the county ot' `lristol and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usetul improvements in \\'renehes; and l do hereby declare thatthe tbllowingis a t'nll, clear, and exact description ot` the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the 1o same, ret'erenee being had to the accompanyim.; drawings, which t'orm a part ot' this specilication, and in which- Figure l is a side viewot'awreneh embodying; my improvement. Fig. 2 is au edge view i5 ot' the same. Fig'. 3 is a section through Fig. L. Fie'. -t is a section through Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view 'ot' the sliding jaw detached.
SimilarI letters oi' reference indicate correzo spondingparts in all the tigures.
This invention has relation to self-adjustine,I wrenches; and it consists in the construction and combination ot' parts, as hereinafter t'uliy described, and particularly pointed out in the 5 claim.
ln the drawings, A is the stem or shank, which is inserted into a woede-u handle, 12, and s ecured by a nut, b,`at its lower end. The projecting' upper part. ot' the sha-uli, above 3o its cylindrical head A', is tint-tened, as shown at JQ, and provided with two diverging lugs or ears, n. n, and a perforation, c. The outer jaw consists ot' two plates or parts, O O, united on one side by the solid -jaw-piece l), which provided with a lat'erally-proiecting' tlange, d. The opposite inside t'aces ot' the janv-plates O O have parallel grooves c e and perlen-ations ff, which register with the aperture c in the upper part ot' the, shank, and the jaw, consist- 40 ing ot' the parts C t) I), is pivoted upouthe tlattened head A2 by means ot a pin, E. The adjustable sliding jaw consists ot' a sliding;` bolt, i?, which is provided with two parallel tlanfg'es, `1/ y, one ou cach side, which tit into the grooves c o ot' the jaw pla-tes or blades O O. The under side ot' bolt F has two notches or recesses, h. i, which receive the ears lla ot' the tlattened head A2, as shown in Fig. 3, and .its upper side is provided on one end with the 5o jaw-piece G, which is made with a tlange, d,

in like manner as jaw l), the tlanges d I being opposite to and registerinjr with each other.
Thejaws or lugs d d are set back t'rom the tace ot` thejaws l) (i, so that there may belct't;
a projecting portion ol' said iaws l) (i, to op- 55 crate as a stop for the nut. or whatever is grasped byjaws or lugs d d.
l. preter to make the laces ot' the jaws D G partly serrated, to enable them to get a better bite on the lint operated upon, and partly 6o smooth, so as to avoid the abrasion ot' painted or otherwise finished surt'aees, il.' the wrench is used on such.
From the ioregoing deseription, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation ol.l my invention will readily be understood without; further explanation. By simply turning the handle the liaws will adjust themselves upon the nut or pipe, as the 'ase may he.
Instead ot' two lugs or eogs, da., as shown 7o in the drawings,al largernumber may be used, the holt;1`bein; il made with a corresponding number of recesses; bntt'or ordinary purposes` two will be t'onud to be sullieient. It' more thantwo are used, they should he disposed in a segment erhalt-circle around piu E as a center, so as to operate with ease. Y
The I'iroieeting tlan ges d d enable the wrench to be used on carriage and other work where thejaws D G could not well he applied. 8o
Having thus described my invention, I cla-im and desire to secure by Letters Patent: ot' the United States- The wrench composed ol' the handle A, with its outer end provided with teeth a (L ot' jaw 85 D, having on each side otl the teeth side pieces, O,havingop1iosite parallel grooves c, and having a lateral tlauge, d, and sliding rack-jaw' F (i, having tlanges r/ and a lateral tiange, d, the tianges d d being set haelt from the face 9o ot" the jaws D G, as and for the purpose set: forth.
, 1n testimony that I elaim the ,loregoing as my own I have hereto atixed my signature in' presence of. two witnesses.
