To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS L. Lannnns. a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Anderson and State of South Carolina, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Pipe renches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention,'such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention has for its object the provision of a tool of the nature of a wrench particularly adapted for gripping pipes and analogous work the same comprising a handle. a jaw pivoted to an end of the handle, and a flexible work-gripping member, such as a chain, pivoted at one end to an end of the jaw and adapted to be adjustably connected with the handle whereby to adapt the wrench for different sizes of pipe.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.

While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The numeral 1 designates the handle of the tool which consists of a bar of any determinate length and size. A lug 2 is provided at the front end of the handle and is centrally disposed and is formed by reducing the end of the bar. Oppositelv inclined shoulders 3 and 4 are formed at the base of WRENCH.

the lug 2 and serve to limit the movement of a jaw 5 which is pivoted to the lug 2. The handle 1 is widened adjacent the lug 2, as indicated at 6" and a bayonet or L-shaped slot 7 is formed therein.

The jaw 5 is approximately of triangular form and is pivoted intermediate its ends to the lug 2, as indicated at 8, said jaw having a centrally disposed recess 9 in its rear side to receive the lug 2. The gripping face 10 of the jaw 5 is concave and toothed so as to obtain a maximum amount of contact with a pipe 11 or analogous work.

The flexible work-gripping member 12 preferably consists of a chain which is pivotally connected at one end to an end of the jaw 5 as indicated at 13, said chain being engageable with the slot 7, whereby it is held in the required adjusted position according to the diameter or size of the pipe or other article to be gripped. The gripping member 12 is provided at intervals in its length with lateral extensions 14 which over lap and engage portions of the handle adjacent and bordering upon opposite sides of the inner portion of the slot 7 as indicated most clearly in Figure 2. In the preferable construction. the links comprising the chain are connected by means of pins and the ends of the latter project to form the lateral extensions 14 which hold the gripping member in the required adjusted position. The jaw 5 may be adjusted to engage one or the other of the sets of stop shoulders 3 or 4, according to the nature of the work and the direction in which it is required to rotate the same.

What is claimed is:

1. A pipe wrench comprising a handle having a centrally disposed lug at one end and reverselv inclined stop shoulders at the base of the lug. and having the portion adjacent the lug widened and provided with an L- shaped slot, a jaw pivoted intermediate its ends to the said lug, and a flexible work-gripping member pivoted at one end to an end of the jaw and having lateral extensions at intervals in its length and adapted to adjustably engage the slot of the handle.

2. A pipe wrench comprising a handle hav ing a centrally disposed lug at one end and reversely inclined stop shoulders at the base cave and toothed, and e chain pivoted at one end to an end of the aw and having its links connected by means of pins vwhose ends pro-' ject to provide lateral extensions whereby to hold the chain to the handle in the re- 10 quiied adjusted position.
