RALPH A. WAKEFIELD; OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED REVERSIBLE HASP an?) LATCH.
Application filled May 20, 1922. Serial. No. 562,360.
T 0 allavh'om it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH A. WAKEFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Reversible Hasps and Latches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in combined hasp-latches such as are used in connection with gates, garage and barn doors and the like; the principal object of my invention being to provide a combined hasp and latch whose position may be reversed, that is, it will serve equally well for a left hand as for a right hand gate or door, without necessitating a special type being made for either one or the other.
Another object is to provide a latch means operable from either side of a door.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts'in the several views.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the complete device, as mounted on a door or gate, and in a latched position.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross section of the device, showing an auxiliary catch member usable in connection with the main device, when the latter is mounted on a door set in a jamb-frame.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the main hasp member, preferably a fiat plate flexibly or pivotally mounted onto the door 2 as by a pin or bolt 3 at the end of the hasp farthest from the free edge of the door. The opposite or outer end of the hasp extends beyond the edge of the door and is bent outwardly at right angles thereto to form an ear 4 provided with an orifice 5 adapted to register with a corresponding orifice 6 in a lug 7 having formed therewith a right-angled plate 8 which is whose bar 11 passes through the holes 5 we and 6.
The latch means comprises a pin 12 projecting from the plate 8 and adapted to pass through an enlarged hole l3 in the member 1 the pin having an enlarged head '14 onits I outer end, also passable through said hole.
Between the outer end of the hasp and the pivotal pin 3 is another bolt or pin 15 passing through an enlarged hole 16 in the door,
and being provided on its inner end with a handle member 17.
If asmooth working and non-binding operation of the device is desired, while avoiding lost motion and undue freedom of play, the member 15 may be made in the form of a bolt, with a sleeve 18 about the bolt between the head 15 -on the outer end and a washer 19 at the inner end, the. sleeve projeoting slightly farther than the inner face of the door and the washer being firmly held against the sleeve by a nut 20.
A staple member 21 is preferably provided on the outside of the hasp to form a hanger for the padlock when the latter is not in use, and also serving as a handle or lifting means for the hasp.
In operation, assuming the hasp is latched, to disengage the latch and open the door it is only necessary to raise the hasp 1 about its pivotal pin 3 sufliciently so that the upper edge of the orifice 13 is raised above the upper edge of the head 14-, thereby allowing the hasp to pass over the head and the door or gate to be opened. 7
This raising of the hasp is done from either side of the door, by either raising up on the handle 17 or the staple 21, while it is understood that the staple may be omitted and an outer extension similar to the handle 17 formed with the pin 15 if desired.
Since the latching of the hasp is had by reason of the contacting of the upper edge of the pin 12 with the adjacent edge of the orifice 13 when the hasp drops of its own weight. it will be evident that the same action takes place if the hasp is inverted or reversed, as would be necessary to accommodate it to a door or gate hinged at its left hand side.
In connection with this structure I have provided an auxiliary latch means, operable only from the inside of the door, consisting of a plate 22 slidably mounted on the hasppins 3 and 15 for movement transversely of the door, said plate being provided with a slotted and right angled lug 23 adapted to receive a staple 2% projecting theretoward from the door amb 9 It will therefore be seen that when the member 22 is engaged with the staple, the door cannot be opened from the outside, since manipulation of the hasp will not serve to disengage the auxiliary latch.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
' vVhile this specification sets forth in detail the presentand preferred construction of the device, stillin practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended. claims. I
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A combined hasp and latch structure comprising a main member adapted to be positionedon one, face of a door and projecting beyond the free end thereof, a co operating member adapted to be fixed on a door frame, latch means between said members, and auxiliary latch means mounted in connection with the main member on the opposite face of the door and operable independently thereof.
2. A combined hasp and latch structure comprising a main member adapted to be positioned on one face of a door and projecting beyond the free end thereof, a co operating member adapted to be fixed on a door frame, latch means between said members, horizontally spaced pins fixed to the main member and projecting through the door and a latch-plate slidably mounted on the inner ends of the pins.
3. A combined hasp and latch structure comprising a main member adapted tobe positioned on one face of a door and pro jecting beyond the free end thereof, a cooperating member adapted to be fixed on a door frame, latch means between said members, horizontally spaced pins fixed to the main member and projecting through the door, a latch plate slidably mounted on the inner ends of the pins and having a slotted right-angle bend at its end adjacent the door frame, and a staple fixed with regard to the frame projecting into thepath of movement of the slotted bend.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
RALPH A. AKEFIELD.
