' HASP.
. Application filed June 6,1921. Serial No. 475,408.
1 '0 all whom it may, concern:
Be it known that l, GUSTAV A. CAnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing-at dlll llavenswood Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented a new and useful lmills provement in Hasps, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to hasps for use in connection with barn doors or the like. I
The primary object is to provide a beep which can be cheaply manufactured, which can be readily applied, and which is very secure. A further object is to provide such a hasp which'is reversible, so that rights and lefts are not needed.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a broken perspective view of a door and door jamb equipped with the improved hasp; Fig. 2, a horizontal sectional view, showing the door in closed position, the handle of the latch member being shown brokenly; Fig. 3, a section taken as indicated at the line 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. l, a section taken as indicated at the line 4 of Fig. 1;
In the construction illustrated A represents a door; A, a doorj'amb or post; B, a keeper secured to the jarnb A; and O a latch device secured to the door and coacting with the member B.
The keeper B comprises a small sheetmetal plate having an attaching portion 1 provided with holes for receiving screws, and provided at one vertical edge with an arrow-head 1 and at the other vertical edge with apadlock loop 1. The members 1 and 1 are preferably formed integrally with the plate 1, by stamping the plate to a suitable form and then bending the members 1 and 1 so that they are disposed in planes substantially at right angles to the base portion of the plate. The base portion of the plate is shown secured to the jamb A by means of the screws 2.
The latch device C preferably comprises a mounting plate 3, which is provided with perforations which accommodate the attaching screws 3-; a latch plate l, which is connected with the rear end of the plate 3 by means of a rivet 4; and a finger piece 5, which is formed separately from, but is rigidly connected with the latch plate l.
T he door is provided near its free vertical edge with a perforationor slot 6, through foration or slot 7 ,which registers with the slot 6, through which the stemofthe finger piece 5 works. The mounting plate is further provided ,at its end with an out turned lug or stop 8 which. projects into aslotfi,
with which thelatch plate 4 is provided;
The slot 9 is'of sufficient dimensions to permit the necessary movement of the latch: plate l, and also is adapted tofengagethe arrow-head 1 of the keeper. The arrow is W provided at its base portion with a notch 10, which is adapted to engage the upper wall of the slot 9 of the latch member. The latch plate a has a portion'el which projectspast the end of the mounting plate 3 and is adapted to overlie'the base portion 1 of the keeper B, thus concealingthe screws 2. The
projection l is equipped with an. out turned padlock loop a? which is disposed adjacent the loop 1 when the door is closed, so that a padlock. may be applied to the loops 1"- and l The latch plate l covers the ends of the. screws 3, which serve to secure the mounting plate to the door.
The finger piece 5 comprises a head portion 5 and a stem 5 The finger piece may be stamped from sheet netal. The head 5" is provided with a large perforation 5 so that the finger may be readily inserted 1 when it is desired to open the door; The stem 5 extends through a small perforation or slot 11, with which the latch plated is provided. The finger piece is inserted after the device C has been applied to the door, and is driven in with a tight fit, so that the finger piece virtually becomes a part of the latch plate, for operating purposes. The inner end of the stem 5 serves as a finger, enabling the latch to be lifted from the inner side of the door.
From the description given, it will be understood that all of the parts of the improved device may be formed of sheet-metal by stamping operations. The stop or pro 'ofthe keeper,gand having a slot adapted, to engage the latch-engaging member of the jectio1r8' is short enough so that the latch 4 can be sprung into position after the mounting plate has been secured by screws to the door. After this, the finger piece 5 is driven into the latch plate so tightlythat it cannot be forced out without a great deal of effort, and thus the finger piece will serve as a means for lifting the latch and pulling the door open. 7
By forming the finger piece separately and applying it in the manner described, the improved hasp maybe compactly packed for shipping purposes. The stop 8' serves to prevent the latch member from dropping below its proper position when the door is opened. lIn other" words, the stop 8 serves to hold the latch member din such a position that it will ride on the inclined surface of the arrow-head when the door is closed so that the latch member will automaticailly engage the keeper.
The improved construction is simple, can be manufactured very cheaply, and is thorougly' effective for its purpose. foregoing detailed description has been given for 'clearness of understanding only, and-no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be considered as broadly as {permissible in view of the prior art.
"with screw-receiving; perforations, and a latch plate pivotally-secured to said mounting plate, said latch, plate having an eX- tension adapted'to overlie the base portion keeper, and having also at its end a padlock loop adapted to register with the loop of said keeper. I
2. A device of the character set forth comprising a sheet-metal keeper having a base The gaging member formed integrally with said base portion, and a latch device comprising a mounting plate provided with screw-receiving perforations, a latch plate having one'end riveted to one endof the mounting plate, and having the other end extending beyond the mouting plate and adapted to tical edge a latch-engaging member, and
a latch device comprising a mounting'plate provided with screw-receiving perforations, said mounting plate having at one end an out turned central lug affording a stop, and
a latch plate having. its rear end pivotally secured to the rear end of the mounting plate, said latch plate having an extension provided with a slot which freely engagessaidstop and which also engages the latch: engaging member-of the keeper, the extension of Silld latch plate overlying the base portion of the keeper and being-equipped with an out turned padlock loop which registers with said first named padlock loop.
4. A latch. device comprising a keeper equippedcwith a padlock loop and a latch engaglng member, and a latch device come prising amounting plate, a latch plate having-its rear end pivotally secured to said mounting plate and having its intermedi-l ate portion provided with a slot which registers with a larger slot with which the mounting plate is provided, saidlatch plate also having a projecting portion extending beyond the mounting plate and adapted to overlie the base portion of the keeper, said extension being provided with a slotadapted to engage the latch-engaging member of the keeper and having an out turned pad lock loop adapted to register with said first named padlock loop, and a separately formed linger piece having a stem extending tightly through the firstmentioned slot of said latch plate, said stem being extended to provided a finger accessible for operating the latch from the inner side of the door.
