This invention relates' to a door holder and particularlyea device-applicable to 'such a door as a garage door-for holding the saine 1n open position.
5 It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and efficient door holdingV means comprising few easily operated. Y
Itis more specifically an object ofthis invention to provide a door holding device comprising a rod ycarried on the exterior of and spaced from the door having a downwardly extending recess formed therein and a rod pivoted at oneV end to the wall of a building and having an eyelet at its other end slidable on said first mentioned rod and adapted to drop into said recess.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters `refer to the same parts throughout the different views, and in which Fig. l is a perspective view showing a door having the invention applied thereto, said door being in open position;
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation showing a portion of a pair of doors in closed position with the invention applied thereto; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken 011 the line 2-2 Aof Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the wall of a. building is indicated as 4 having a door jarnb 5 toV which is hinged, in the usual manner, a door 6, said door and jamb 5 having secured thereto the hinges 7. The door 6 is shown as one of a pair of double parts and one which is very doors, the other oppositely swinging door being partly shown as 8. LDoors 6 and r8 are adapted to be connected when closed by a suitable lock or latch 9.
In accordance with the present invention, the doors 6 and 8 have secured thereto a rod 10. This rod is shown as having an intermediate portion spaced from the surface of door 6, the ends of said rod being offset or bent substantiallyl at right angles and having flattened portions 10aL apertured to receive fastening screws or bolts by which said rod is attached to the door. Rod 10 thus extends across or transversely of thek tending recess 10b. While 'this recess may be variously formed, in the. embodiment ofthev invention illust-rated, itis shown as formedfby bending rod l0 downwardly into a U-shaped formation. rod V10 lis another member or rod 1l having one end pivotally connected to a fixed mem ber l2 spaced from the hinged edge of the y door.
While the rod ll may be variously attached, in the embodiment of the inven- (lo-operating with tion illustrated it is shown` asl having an f `being shown as disposed at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. The eyelet 1lb embraces the rod l() and is slidable on the intermediate portion thereof, which is spaced from the door 6.
'When-the door 6 is closed, the eyelet 11b,
as shown in Fig. 27 will be adjacent the end of rod 10, which is nearest the hinged side of the door. The door can beloclred or fastened in closed position as usual. When the dooris open and swings on its hinges, eyelet l1b merely slides k0n rod l0, rod l1 swing* ing about its end disconnected from member 12. When the eyelet 1lb reaches the recess 10b, itvdrops therein and when in this position, the rod l1 holds the door in fixed position. rl`he eyelet 11b is securely held between the parallel sides of recess 10b and said recess will be of such dimensionthat the eyelet will iit snugly therein. All motion of the door is thus prevented,'when the eyelet is in the recess. kWhen itis desired to close the door, the rod l1 is merely lifted to remove eyelet 11"k from recess 10b and said eyelet then slides upon rod 10 until the door is in its closed position. The inclined position of eyelet 11b relative torod 11 permits the sameto readily be lifted from the recess. Y f
From the above description. it is seen that applicant has provided a very simple and eiiicient door holding means and one that operates easily and automatically to hold the door in open position. The parts of the device are very few and are easily and inexpensively made from standard rod material and the parts are easily and quickly installed. The device is very durable and requires no attention for maintenance. The
same has been actually demonstrated in actual practice and has been found to be very successful and efficient.
t will, of course, be understood that Various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts wit-hout departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists of the novel parts and combinations of parts diclosed and defined in the apended claims. A
What is claimed is l. A door holder comprising a round rod formed to be attached to the door at its ends and spaced `from the door at the portion between said ends, said rod adjacent one end of said portion being bent downwardly into U-shape to form arecess, another rod pivoted to a stationary member adjacent and beyond the hinged side of said door and having an eyelet at its other end disposed at an angle thereto, said eyelet embracing said first mentioned rod and slidable thereon and adapted to drop into said recess to hold the door in open position.
2. A door holder comprising a rod se-A cured to adoor at its ends and having an intermediate portion spaced from said door and extending horizontally transversely thereof and parallel thereto and formed with a downwardly extending recess therein adjacent one end Aof said portion, and a rod pivotally connected at one side of said door and having an eyelet. at its other end slidable on said first mentioned rod and adapted to drop into said recess and hold said door in open position.
In testimony whereof I ai'lix my signature.
