To all whom it may concern:

Be it known-that I, LESTER NEAL, a' citizen of the United StatesQresiding at Peoria,

in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Hinges, of which the following is a known as builders hardware, and more particularly relates to a door liinge.

This invention has for its principal object to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed for operably supporting a door so that the door will be normally maintained in a closed position without necessitating the requirement of additionalspring means, et cetera, while at the same time the door may be readily swung open in either direction, and subsequent to the releasethereof will automatically return to a closed position.

More particularly the present invention may be said to consist of a pair of complementalmembers, one of which is designed to be connected to the door frame, While the other is designed for connection to the door and is supported by the first member during swinging movement of the door.

It is a morespecific object of this invention to construct each of the members with hinged knuckles, the adjacent faces of which are beveled correspondingly and positioned so that they will normally intimately contact with each other for the maintenance of the door in a closed position, yet upon the swinging of the door one of these lmuckles will ride upwardly on the other a device-of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple and, the cost of production low and' the efficiency high.-

, Other objects as well as theinature, char-' acteristic features and scope of this invention will, be more readilyapparent from j the following description .taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partially in section showing the door in a closed position.

Fig. 2 is an elevational detail showing the hinge when the door is in an open position.

Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the improved hinge.

Similar charactersof reference are employed in all of the above described views,

to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is illustrated a door frame 1 to which is swingably connected a door 2 by means of the improved hinges which are indicated in its entirety by the numeral 3.

In the present instance each hinge is composed of a pair of sections 4 and 5. Section 4 comprises a plate-like body portion 6 which is of a flatform and is designed to be attached to the inner side face of the door-frame by means of suitable fasteners 7 while formed integral with and vertically of the outer ends of the plate-like body 6 medially of the side edges thereof, is a hinged knuckle 8 of a cylindrical form, the upper edge of which is beveled downwardly from a point above the plate-likebody 6 to a point'on the opposite surface as indicated by the numeral 9, while embedded within and projecting centrally and upwardly from the upper beveled edge 9 of the knuckle 8 is a. pintle 10. The other section 5 of the hinge consists of an attaching body 11 of a beveled conformation, the sides of which are positioned on opposite sides of the door, being straddled about the inner edge of the door and these sides are provided with openings 12 through which are engaged suitable fasteners '18 for the attaching of the section 5 in position on the door. The attaching body 11 has formed integral with the outer face of its intermediate portion and vertically thereof, another hinged knuckle ll which is provided with a longitudinal bore 15 for rotatable disposition about the upright pintle 19, while the lower edge of this knuckle 14 1s beveled as at 15 corresponding to the beveled upper end 9 of the knuckle 8. , It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of this invention and that various minor, changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

What is claimed is N a A hinge of the kind described comprising a pair of sections for mounting on a gate and gate-post respectively, that section for mounting on the gate-post embodying a plate-like attaching body and a knuckle formed integral with the outer face thereof, the upper end of said knuckle being beveled from a point above the point of juncture of the knuckle with the plate [downwardly to a point directly opposite said juncture point,

that section for mounting on the gate embodying an attaching element and a knuckle beveled on the lower end to conform to and engage the beveled end of the first said knuc le, a pintle mounted in the first said knuckle and entering the last said knuckle so that the latter may turn on it as a pivot when the relative positions of the beveled ends of the two knuckles change for the purpose specified, the plate-like body and the attaching element being conformable t0- the 'po'stand to the edge of the gate on which they are respectively attached.
