DOOR SUPPORT.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 23,1919.

Quorum UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS T. mass, or suture, ALLBAMA.
noon-surronr.
To all in From it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, LOUIS T. Earns, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Selma, in the county of Dallas and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. l y r This invention relatesto an improved door support, and as one of the objects of the invention, it is the aim to provide a device of this kind, which is simple, efiicient and. practical in construction, and may be manufactured for a relatimly low cost and sold. at a reasonable profit.
it is well known that doors or the like depending simply upon hinges for support, in time sag, and therefore drag or scrape on the sill, particularly at the outer lower portion of the lower edge of the door. Hence, as a further object of the invention, it is the aim to provide an improved door support,
which hingedly connects to the upper part of the frame of the door axially with the hinge of the door, and is connected to the door, thereby preventing sagging, and consequently the dragging of the lower edge of the door on the sill.
By means of this support, it is obvious that the door will not in time bind upon the sill, but to the contrary will completely close.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a door support consisting of a single length of heavy rod or wire material, bent to form an irregular loop and l1aving its arms secured to the door andprovided with a vertical straight portion, which axially alines with the hinge of the door and is hingedly connected to the frame of the door, thereby supporting the door, in fact reinforcing the door and preventing the same from sagging, whether in closed or open positions.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a plate secured on the frame of the door for the reception of the vertical. straight portion of the loop. and provided. with means on one end of the plate, to be engaged by a part of the loop, to addition ally support the door, in fact, to impart a slight lifting action to the door as it cornpletely closes, thereby preventing the door from sagging and dragging upon the sill.
While the design and construction at pres- Specification of t r nt. Patented Mar. 23, 1920. Application flledlulyfili, 1919. ScriaINo. 312,740.
out illustrated and set forth is deemed preferablo,-it is obvious that as a result of a re duction of the invention to a more practical form for eon'nuercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed. 1
The invention comprises further features andcombination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in. the drawings and claimed. l
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a pars )ective view of a portion of a door frame and a hinged door mounted therein, and illustrating the improved door support applied.
ig. 2 is a perspective view showing the door open, andillustrating the support.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail, view of the support detached.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the door frame, to which a conventional term of door 2 is hingedly connected by means of the upper doorhinge 3.
, The door support is constructed. from a single length of heavy rod or wire material, bent to form an irregular loop 1, such as that illustrated. This loop has one of its arms 5 provided. with an angular portion 6, which terminates in an eye 7, for the reception of the screw, bolt or the like 8, to secure said arm to the panel of the door.
The arm having the angular portion is provided with a vertical straight part 11, which is mounted in a bearing 11?. of a. plate 13. This plate 13 comprises a body portion 14 having one end rolled or over-turned, to form a vertical hearing. The plate is secured by screws or bolts 15 to the frame of the door. The other end of the plate at its upper corner is provided with a laterally extending inclined projection 16. The other arm 5 comprises a horizontal portion 17 and an angularly extending portion 18, which is disposed at an obtuse angle to the horizontal portion. At the point where the portion 18 extends from the horizontal portion 17 said. portion 18 cams or rides over the projection 16, which is inclined correspondingly to the portion 18, acting as a reinforcement or support, and to so tension on the portion 18. as to cause the portion 18 to impart a pulling or raising action on the door, particularly as the door reaches its closed position, hence preventing the door from sagging and fpar-f ging upon the sill. r
'lhe invention'having been set forth, what 1s clalmed as newand useful is 1. In a closure support, the combination with a frame, of a closure hingedly mounted therein, a support comprising a looped member. having arms, one secured to the closure in closed position to its hinged end, thelother being fastened to the closure adjacent the free end thereof, said looped member. having a straight portion axially alined with the hinge of the closure, a bearing carried by the door frame axially alined with the hinge of the closure and adapted to receive the straightportion of the looped member.
2. In a door support, the combination with Ia frame, of a doorhingedly mounted there- 7 in, a support comprising a looped member having arms secured to one face of the door, said looped member having 5 a vertical straight portion, and a bearing carried by the door frame axially alined with the hinge of the door and adapted to receive a vertical 7 straight portion of the loop, said bearing having a plate, one end of which being provided with a lateral inclined, projection, the upper nart of the supporting loop having a horizontal part and an inclined part, the former of which being disposed in parallel with the upper edge of the plate, and
the latter of which adapted to cam or ride upon the lateral projection, hence support ing and reinforcing the inclined part of the loop and preventing sagging of the door.
3. In a door support, the combination with a door frame and a door hingedl mounted therein, of a plate secured to the top part of the frame, one end of said plate having a lateral projection inclined down Wardly, the other end of the plate having a. vertical bearing axially alined with the hinge of the door, a door supporting loop comprising a pair of arms securely connected to thedoor, one of the arms of the loop having a vertical straight portion engaging said vertical bearing, the lower end of the support having ahorizontal portion in parallcl with the upper edge of the plate, the other arm of the supporting loop being inclined downwardly and laterallv from said. horizontal portion and adapted to ride or cam upon said projection, for reinforcing the loop and preventing the door from sagging.
In testimon whereof I hereunto allix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
