To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that L Anohrn Fnmsorrnn, a citizen ot the United States, and residing at New York. inthe county ot New York and State ot New Yorka have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Theft proof Devices "for Pocketbooks, i/Vallets. yand the like, of which the following is a specifii cation, such `aswill enable. those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices adapted for use in connection with pocketbooks and wallet-s and the like tor retaining the same in "connect-ion' with ay pocket in the gariiient of the wearer or in connection with any other part. of the garment, and the object oit the invention is to provide a device or" Vthe class specified comprising a flexible member composed of strong and durable material provided at one end with means for retaining the same in connection with a part of the garment of the wearer and at its other end with means Jfor detachably securing a pocketbook, wallet` or the like in connection therewith; and with this and other objects in view the invention Consists in a device of the class and tor the purpose specilied which is simple in ecnstruction, etlicient in use and which is fonstructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention fully disclosed in the tollowing specification, of' which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are des ignated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view ot a pocketbook showing one method of applying my theftproot device thereto and diagrammatically illustrating the method of its use;
Fig. 2 aV partial section on the line 2 2 of Fig. YY1;
Y' 3 a plan view of a pocketbook or wallet showing another uform of'myimprov'ed device mounted in connection therewith;
Fig. 4 a plan view ofthe device shown in Fig. 3 in detail and in anextend'ed position;
Fig. "5 a view similar to Fig. Ll but showing a Vmodiiication; and,
Fig. 6 a perspective det-ail view of another form of pocketbook showing my improved device as shown in Figs. 3 and l ot the drawing mounted in connection with said pocketbook.
]t 'is a wellknown fact that pocketbooks.l wallets and the like mounted in pockets ot the garment or garments ofthe wearer, or mounted in connection with handbags and the like are tree. to be withdrawn or removed from said pockets or handbags by thieves,
snap fastening' devices 12 lat either end thereoic adapted to cooperate wilthf corresponding devices on theopposite side lfaces of the pocketbook 10, and by ,det-aching either one of the fastening devices 12 the pocketbook may be opened.
Wit-h the construction shown in Figs. l and 2 ofthe drawing, I provide a pocketbook 10 with the male member 13 ot a snap fastening device, and also employ one of my improved anchoring or theftproof `devices 14 comprising a :flexible and strong and du rable chain member' 15 provided at one end with a suitable clasp device 16 and at Iits opposite end with. a strap member 17 pro vided with the female member 18 ot' a snap fastening device adapted to receive the memb'er 13 on the pocketbook 10.
1n Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have indicated at 19 apart of a garment and dot and dash lines 1 have indicated a pocket 20 in such garment within which Ithe pocketbook 10 is placed, and the clasp device 16 is shown secured to either Yedge 21 of the pocket with vthe chain 15 entending into the pocket.
With a pocket-book or wallet secured' in po` sition as shown in Fig. 1 ofthe drawing, it will be necessaryto apply pressureponto the pocketbook or wallet l'and 'against the-body of the wearer inreinovin'g 'the strap inem-ber 717, or the part 18ct thesnap fastenineide- 'vice' from the'pait lauf said dev-.tasca the pocketbook.Y- e
` In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing it. will `be apparent that the vdevice`1f1 is secured directly to the pocketbook or wallet 10 and in Figs. 3 and 4C of the dra-wing, I have shown another form of my improved device in which 1 employ a strap member 22 composed of two part-s 23 and 24, the part 23 being provided at one end with a buckle 25, and the part 24 being provided at one end with a plurality ot' space-d holes 26 in connection with which the buckle is adapted to operate to adjust or regulate the size ot said strap member 22, and the other ends of said parts 23 and 24 are provided with interlocking snap tastening devices 27 for detachably securing said ends together', and in the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 ot' the drawing the device 14 is detachably secured to the part 23 ot the strap member 22.
ln the use ot the device shown in Figs. 3 and ot the drawing, the strap member 22 is l'rst passed around the pocketbook or wallet i0, and the ends oit the separate parts 23 and 24 are provided with the buckle and apertures respectively are brought together and connected to form a closure for the pocketbook l() or a strap member for holding the separate parts ot' said pocketbook in position, and when it is desired to open the pocketbook or wallet the parts 23 and 24 of the strap member 22 are detached through the snap fastening device 27 thus facilitating the quick opening and closing ot the pocketbook or wallet, whenever desired. It will be understood that the tree end ot the chain l5 of the device` i4, which is not shown in Fig. 3, will be provided with a clasp 1G as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 ot the drawing and may be anchored in the same manner as shown in Fig. 1, or in any other desired manner.
ln Fig. 5 ot the drawing I have shown a modification ot the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, in which I substitute tor the strap member 22, a. strap member 28 composed ot two parts 29 and 30 joined by a resilient or elastic member 3l, and the -free ends of the parts 23 and 30 are provided with interlocking snap fastening devices 32, and the device 14 is shown mounted in connection with the part 27 of the strap member 28. The use ot this device will be the same as the device shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, with the exception that the adjustment ot the size of the strap member 28 will be automatically taken care ot by the resilient or elastic powers of the part 31 ot said strap member.
in Fig. 6 l have shown a pocketbook 33 of the bill folding type, and in this form of construction l employ a strap member similar to that shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing', and instead of encircling the pocketbook or wallet as in Figs. 3 and 4, the strap member 22 is passed through and beneath the part 34 ot said pocketbook by cutting transverse slits 35 in one side face ot the pocketbook 33, as clearly shown in said figure. `With this construction the strap member 22 is retained in connection with the pocket-book.
t will be understood that while I have shown certain methods of carrying my invention into effect, that I am not necessarily lin'iited to various uses of my improved device herein shown and described, nor am i limited to any specific use thereof, and various changesv in and modifications ot the construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope ot the appended claims, without departing from 'the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its ad vantages.
