Be it known that I, WALTER l3. Bnown, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of {lak Park, in the county'of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hair curlers which are particularly useful for curling bobbed hair. in general my improved hair curler comprises a clamping member which receives and clamps the bobbed hair at its ends and which is then turned on longitudinal axis to roll or wind up the hair to form the curl, a locking frame being provided which will serve as a handle for revolving the clamping member and which after rolling up of the hair can be secured in place on the clamping member to lock the hair and clamping member against unrolling, so that the rolled up hair will be held in rolled up position until it is desired to release it. The objert of the invention is to produce a device of this class of simple inexpensive construction which can be readily and conveniently manipulated to roll up the hair and lock it, and which can be readily manipulated with one hand to be unlocked and quickly released from the hair.

Referring to the drawings the device comprises the clamping and curling member C and the locking member or frame L. The clamping member consists of a narrow strip of spring steel folded substantially midway between its ends to form the clamping jaws Serial No. 698,005.

The end of the jaw 10 is bent back to form the locking hook 12 and the .swung a distance laterally to bring its end 11 clear of the hook 12, whereupon the jaw 11 is then shifted into normal parallelism with the jaw 10 with its end 11' under the hook12 and locked by the corners 13 and 14:. Before the clamping member is closed the ends of the bobbed hair to be curled are inserted between the jaws and then the clamping member is rotated on its longitudinal axis to wind up the clamped hair thereon to form the curl. Provision must however be made to prevent unwinding or unrolling of thehair and I provide the locking frame As shown this frame is preferably constructed of wire bent to the desired shape. In Figs. 1 to 4 the frame is of oblong shape, and has the loops 16 and 17 at its inner and outer ends respectively. The loop 16 has its yoke 18 extending through the holes 19 in the opposed walls of the bend 20 of the clamping member, so that the locking frame is hinged to the clamping member. The loop 17 j is adapted to engage over the hooked end or crown of the jaw 10 where a transverse notch 21 is provided for receiving the loop yoke.

The sides 22 and 23. of the locking frame are deflected laterally to be spaced a dis tance away from the clamping member when the device is closed. The dimensions of the frame are such that the spring of the frame will hold the loop 17 within, the locking notch 21. Preferably the sides v22 and 23 are bowed slightly outwardly so that a slight pressure thereon will sufiicientlyelongate the frame L to permit the loop lTto be readily brought over the crown end of the jaw 10 and into the notch 21. Then when it is desired to unlatch the locking frame a slight pressure will withdraw the loop 17 fro-1n the locking notch to permit the frame to be readily swung into open position. i thus produce a very simple, inexpensive and neat curling device which can be efficiently and easily manipulated to curl up bobbed hair and which will hold itself in locked position.

I do not desire to be limited to the exact construction, arrangement and operation shown and described, as changes are possible which will still come within the scope of the invention.

1 claim as follows:

1. in a hair curling device of the class described, the combination of a clamping member comprising spring jaws secured together one end and adapted to be brought together to receive hair to be curled, a locking hook at the end of one of said jaw members adapted to receive the other jaw member whereby said jaw members be locked together to form a support on which the clamped hair may be wound up into a curl, locking trame 0t spring metal hinged at one end to the joined end of said jaw menr hers and being adapted to be swung into position to receive said clamping member and the hair wound up thereon to prevent unwinding ot the hair, the hook at the end of one oi said jaw members having a. latch notch and said locking frame being adapted to spring into said notch to be thereby locked to the clamping member.

2. In a. hair curling device of the class describet the combination of a clamping member formed ol' a band oi? spring metal bent intermediate its ends to provide opposed jaw members between which the ends of hair to be curled may be clamped, means for looking the ends of said jaw members together to clamp the received hair, said jaw members: when locked together forming a support on which the clamped hair may be wound up to form a. curl, a locking frame of spring wire hinged at one end to the bend of said clamping member, one of said jaw members having a latch notch, said locking frame being adapted to be swung into position with its free end in spring latching en gagement in said notch to be thereby locked to the clamping member and to prevent unwinding oi the hair thereon.
