M. 1.. HENRY HAIR CURLER Filed Apiil 1, 1924 Afauy Z. @6477 fmowww Patented May 5, 1925.
UNITED STATES MARY L. HENRY, OF JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS.
HAIR ounnnn.
Application filed April 21, 1924. Serial No. 708,026.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY L. HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet apparatus, particularly to hair curling devices, and has for its object the provision of a novel device designed particularly, though not limited in this respect, for curling bobbed hair so as to produce the much desired cascade and wavy effect which is so much in vogue at the present time.
An important and more specific object is the provision of a device of this character which is of a clamp-like nature and well adapted for engagement upon either short or comparatively long hair, though usually the former, whereby the present and com monly known bobbed hair may be given the undulatory or wavy effect which is so nearly an approximation of naturally curly hair.
Another object is the provision of a hair curling device of this character which will be extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to apply and adjust, positive in action, efiicient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be heremafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing it in entirely open position.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the position of the parts when the strands of hair are initially clamped, prior to the twisting or curling operation.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device showing the supplemental or auxiliary arm in its operative or clamping position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates, broadly, the main portion of the device which is formed from a single length of resilient strip metal bent upon itself intermediate its ends to define a substantially open loop 11 which is more than semi-circular in shape and which terminates in an elongated tongue 12 which has a rounded end 13. The tongue 12 is of somewhat less length than the main or body portion of the member 10, for a purpose to be explained. In other words, it may be said that the main or base arm of the body portion 10 is of somewhat greater length than the tongue 12, and the free end of the member 10 is formed with an opening, circular or of other shape, 15': which is likewise for a purpose to be described.
Slidably mounted upon the main or body portion 10 is a retaining clement designated broadly by the numeral 15, which retaining element is preferably formed from a single piece of resilient metal bent into an open loop form and slidable upon the main portion so as to be capable of disposition in embracing relation to the tongue 12, as shown in Figure 2. It should, however, be noted that there is no particular limitation as to the precise structural details of these elements as they may obvious ly be varied within considerably wide limits.
The device further includes a third arm 16 which, in actual practice, may very Well be formed from a single length of resilient wire having one end coiled or bent, as shown at 17 and engaged within an opening 14 and so bent as to prevent casual disengagement from the member designated broadly by the numeral 10.
In. order to provide retaining means for the free end of the member 16, the bight portion or reflex bend 11 of the main or body portion is formed with a diagonal slot 18 adapted to have the free end of the element 16 engaged therein.
In the operation, assuming that all the parts of the device are in disconnected or open position, as shown in Figure 1, the very ends of the strands 0r wisp of hair to be curled are engaged between the elements 10 and 12, subsequently to which the element 12 is pressed toward the member 10 to exert a clamping action upon the ends, and the member 15 moved so as to slidably engage over and upon the free end 13 of the member 12. This effectually clamps or grips the ends of the wisp or strands of hair tightly and positively prevents slipping. The device is then turned or rotated toward the head until the desired number of convolutions of the hair have been wrapped about the assembled elements 1( and 12, subsequently .to which the arm 16 is swung over and above or into clamping relation with respect to the coil of hair, with its free end engaged within the slot disengage the tongue 12 so that the entire device may bedise'ngaged from the hair. The foregolng described procedure onables the operator to completely curl or avave the'hair by the use of the device, since thetres's of hair is Wrapped on the device from the very end thereof. fith many other devices now in use, the hair is Wound from the roots outwardly upon a member and then a'seco nd member is latched there to to clamp the hair and prevent it from unwinding. While such old devices are more or less satisfactory with long hair, Where the ends are uneven, good results are not obtained by using them with bobbed hair Wherethe ends are otsubslantially uniform length, since the ends of bobbed hair cannot be caught in the former devices and consequently remain unwaved or uncur'led. \Vhen employing such old devices on bobbed hair it is necessary, in order to obtain a desirable finish to the coitture, to employ a'cur'ling iron on the ends of the hair.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form,
slot constituting a keeper, a second keeper slidably mounted upon said main or body portion and adapted to be engaged upon the free end of said tongue, and an arm formed from a single length of resilient Wire having'one end coiled and engaged Within said hole and its other end adapted for engagement Within said slot.
2. A device of the character described comprising a clamping member including a body member and a tongue connected by a loop portion, a keeper movably mounted on the body member and engageable with the tongue, the free end of the body 1116111- ber having a hole therein, and an arm having one end coiledand engaged Within said hole and detachably connected with said loop portion.
In testimony whereof I hereto afiix my signature.
MARY L. HENRY.
