Claims. ((1132-41) This invention pertains to hair curlers of the character provided with means for gripping the ends of the hair preparatory to rolling the same into one or more convolutions to form a curl,

5 and wherein a clamp is provided for holding the hair in its curled condition at the end of the rolling operation.

In hair curlers of this type it has been the practice heretofore to pivot the hair clamp to the body of the hair rolling element in such manner that it is capable of swinging to and from its clamping position only in a single arc with respect to the rolling element. Many times after the hair has been rolled to a position close to the head to form a tight curl it is found that the clamp cannot be closed without partially unwinding the curl. Obviously this is undesirable since the resulting curl will not be close to the head. I have overcome these disadvantages by mounting the clamp so that it may be rotated independently of the hair rolling element. Consequently upon completion of the rolling operation I am enabled to rotate the clamp into proper position to be closed against the hair, making it possible to adjust the curler close to the head assuring a tight lasting curl.

The advantages and distinguishing features of the invention will more clearly appear by referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which;

Figure 1 is a view of a hair curler embodying my invention;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section thereof;

Figure 3 an end view of a hair rolling element 35 suitable for use in my curler; Figure 4 illustrates the manner of gripping the hair preparatory to rolling into a curl; and

Figure 5 shows the hair rolled and clamped close to the head.

In the drawing the numeral indicates a hair rolling element provided with a suitable gripping a spring 14 and constituting gripping jaws for securely holding the ends of the hair 15 preparatory to and while rolling the hair into one or more convolutions to form a curl. To insure a neat and tight lasting curl it is essential that the hair be rolled up until it assumes a position closely adjacent the head and clamped in that position. I have found that this desirable result can be accomplished by mounting the clamp so that it may be rotated'indlependently of the rolling element. For this purpose a suitable hair clamp, for instance, of the bail type designated 16 may be swingably mounted on a stud 17 by a fastener 18, and'the stud rotatably retained within one end of the rolling element 10 in any satisfactory 'manner suchas by indenting the stock of the rolling element at 19 into an annular groove 20 of the 66 stud. The bail may have portions extending along the rolling element and spread adjacent the finger piece as shown in the drawing. However, this is given merely as one practical form of construction and is not intended as a limitation, for it is evident that various types of mounting may be substituted permitting rotation of the clamping member 16 independently of the hair rolling element 10.

From the foregoing description it is clear that 70 after the hair has been rolled to a desired position adjacent the head that the clamp 16 may be readily turned about its longitudinal axis and then swung on its pivot 18 over the curl to hold the same in place during such period as it is allowed to set. Any suitable means may be employed for holding the clamp in closed position, and such clamp may be of any desirable constructio'n whether of the bail type or otherwise. One suitable form of holding or locking means for the clamp may consist of a series of radial notches in the outer end of the hair rolling element 10 into which the free end of a clamp such as the bail 16 is adapted. to be snapped so as to occupy the position illustrated in Figure 5 wherein the hair has been rolled close to the head and the clamp adjusted to hold the hair in that position. If desired, one or both of the members 10 and 11 constituting the hair gripping and rolling means may be perforated for quick drying.

My hair curler is adapted for use with either long or short hair. For short hair it will be especially appreciated, since by the combination of gripping means for holding the short ends preparatory to and while wrapping the hair to form a tight curl, and the 'adjustability of the hair clamp, I am enabled to complete with ease and in a minimum of time the entire hair dressing operation, and without pulling or otherwise causing discomfort.

While I have shown and described one satisfactory embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that it may be otherwise embodied within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A hair curler comprising a rolling element, a spring pressed member adapted to grip the ends of the hair against the rolling element preparatory to and while rolling the hair into one or more convolutions around said rolling element to form a curl,'in combination with a hair clamp comprising a bail piece which is pivoted for rotation independently of the hair rolling element and swingable to and from clamping position against the hair, whereby the ends of short hair may be initially gripped between said spring pressed member and said rolling element to facilitate starting and rolling the hair into a tight curl closely adjacent the head, and whereby said curl subsequently may be held in that position by adjustment of the bail piece.

2. A hair curler including a pair of hair gripping jaws comprising a rolling element and a member provided with a spring for positively urging said member against the rolling element, said curler also being provided with a finger piece for opening said jaws against the action of said spring, in combination with a hair clamp comprising a bail piece which is pivoted for rotation independently of the hair rolling element and swingable to and from clamping position against the hair, whereby the ends of short hair may be inserted between the opened jaws and then positively gripped therebetween by releasing the finger piece facilitating starting and rolling the hair into one or more convolutions around said rolling element to form a tight curl closely adjacent the head, and whereby the clamping bail may be adjusted to hold said curl in its tightly wound condition during such time as it is allowed to set.

3. A hair curler comprising a rolling element and a hair gripping member, means for positively urging said gripping member toward the rolling element whereby to grip the ends of the hair therebetween at the start of and during the operation of winding the hair onto the rolling element to form a curl terminating closely adjacent the head, in combination with a hair clamp in the form of a bail piece which is pivoted for rotation independently of the hair rolling element and swingable to and from clamping position against the hair.

In a hair curler provided with hair rolling means and a clamping bail having a looped end adapted to engage one end of said rolling means and wherein said bail is bodily rotatable independently of the rolling means, the provision of radial notches in said end of the rolling means for releasably interlocking with the looped end of the bail.

5. A hair curler comprising a rolling element, a gripping member swingably secured to the rolling element, a spring urging said gripping member against the rolling element whereby they provide clamping jaws for positively gripping the ends of the hair preparatory to and while winding the hair around the rolling element to form a curl, and a finger piece for opening said jaws against the action of said spring, in combination with a hair clamping bail in the form of a loop having hair engaging portions extending along the rolling element and being spread adjacent said finger piece to clear the same and wherein said bail is pivoted for rotation independently about the axis of the rolling element and swingable to and from clamping position against the hair, whereby the ends of the hair may be readily gripped between said clamping jaws by operation of the finger piece to open said jaws against the spring, and whereby the clamping bail may be adjusted to hold the hair in a tightly wound position closely adjacent the head.
