Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,031, dated May 19, 1874; application iiled February 11, 1874.

To all whom it may concern: i

Be it known that I, JESSE A. JONES, of Raleigh, in the county of Wake andY State of North Carolina, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Wash-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a top view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken on line x a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line s s of Fig. 1.

My invention relates to that class of washboilers which cleanse the clothes by causing boiling water to pass through them, and consists of conic-shape tubes at the bottom of the wash-boiler, having openings at the sides of the tubes to allow the water to descend, the bottom of the wash-boiler being provided with holes leading into the conic-shape tubes, which rest upon the bottom of a common boiler inclosing the wash-boiler.

A represents an ordinary boiler. B is the bottom of the wash-boiler, attached on the topot' a base, C, which rests upon the bottom of boiler A. The bottom B is made with holes b connecting with conic-shape tubes b', the large ends of which are fastened to the bottom around the holes, and the other ends of these tubes are entirely closed and arranged to rest on the bottom of boiler A, as shown in the drawings, thus forming aiirm support to the bottom B. In the side and about equidistant from the point to the top of each tube b', is an opening c, through which the water descends into the boiler after passing through the clothes. D represents tapering pipes at the sides of the boiler, and E E are water-passages at the ends of the boiler, extending through bottom B and up to the band e and rim F, to which the pipes and walls of the passages are fastened at the top, as shown in the drawings. On the inner sides and at the upper ends of these pipes and passages are holes d, for conducting the water upon the clothes. H represents narrow strips extending crosswise and lengthwise ofthe boiler, and fastened at the ends to pipes D and the walls of passages E, andare supported'by a strip, c, extending the whole length of the boiler and resting on bottom B, thus forming a firm rack to support the clothes above the bottom. The strips H are made narrow, so as to obstruct the passage of the water as little as possible. The pipes D are made tapering toward the top to increase the force with which the water is thrown upon the clothes.

The wash-boiler being placed in a common boiler supplied with the proper quantity ot' water, and heat applied, the water is forced by the heat up the` pipes and passages against rim F and through holes d, and with considerable force, upon the clothes, through which it passes, and then descends through holes o, tubes b', and holes o, into boiler A, to be reheated and returned through the pipes and passages, as before described. And this process is continued, the water being changed meantime as often as required, till the clothes are thoroughly cleansed. Y

As many pipes as can well be arranged on the sides, as well as the end passages, are used for the purpose of carrying the water up and passing it through the clothes as rapidly as possible, and thus cleansing the clothes in the shortest possible time.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a wash-boiler, the conicshape tubes b, with closed ends, arranged to rest on the bottom of an outer boiler, A, and having openings c in their sides, in combination with bottom B, having holes b, substantially as and for the purposes described.
