UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM J. THOMAS, OF FREDERICK CITY, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENTIIN WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 140,444, dated July 1, 1873; application filed May 31, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. THOMAS, of Frederick city, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam Wash-Boilers, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved boiler taken through the line :0 a, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same taken through the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in the improvement of wash-boilers, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
A is the boiler, which is constructed in the ordinary manner and provided with a close cover, B. In the end parts of the boilerA are formed tubular chambers O, in the upper part of the inner sides of which are formed transverse slots 0 through which the steam and water are discharged upon the clothes. The bases 0 of the tubes 0 project inward a little above the bottom of the boiler. D is a false bottom, in which are formed two rows of holes or openings, d, one row upon each side of the central line and about half-way between said central line and the side edges of said bottom. The holes d are covered upon the upper side of the bottom D by strips E, which are bent into about the form shown in Fig. 2, and are secured to said bottom at their ends and centers, so as to form arches over the holes d, to prevent the clothes from being forced into the holes d by the pressure of the water, clogging them and preventing the free circulation of the Water. To the under sides of the bottom 'D, between the rows of holes (1 and the side edges of said bottom, are secured the, upper edge of the plates F, the lower edges and ends of which are bent inward, and which are connected and held in their proper relative positions by two or more cross-strips, G, the ends of which are secured to the bottom flanges of the said plates F. To the center of the bot tom D is attached the upper edge of a plate, H, which does not project so low as the plates F, and to the lower edge of which is secured a horizontal strip, I, which projects upon each side of said strip H, and thus forms a Tplate. J are plates the edges of which are pivoted in the angles between the bottom D and the side plates F by wires passing through the end flanges of the said plates F. The plates J are made of such a width that their inner edges may rest upon the side flangesor parts of the plate I, as shown in Fig. 2, and have holes formed through them in such positions as to be between the holes of the bottom'D. The bottom flanges of the plates F rest uponthe bottom of the boiler A, and said plates Ikare made of such a height that one end of the bottom D may pass beneath the base 0 of one of the tubes (3, and its other end is held down by buttons K pivoted to the base 0 of the other tube 0.
In using the boiler the pressure of the steam when generated presses the hinged plates J up against the lower side of the bottom D, closing the openings d in said bottom until the said plates J are again forced down by the pressure of the water, thus establishing 21. current.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the bent strips E, downwardly-projectiu g flanged plates F, theT-plate H I, and the hinged plates J with the false bottom D and the tubes 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
Witnesses: WILLIAM J. THOMAS.
