IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,635, dated September 21, 1872.

Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved clothes-washer, simple in construction and effective in operation, and which shall be so constructed that the clothes cannot clog it andimpede or obstruct its operation; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the device,
as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents an ordinary wash-boiler, about the construction of which there is nothing new. B is a false bottom, which is fitted snugly into the interior of the boiler A. The false bottom B has flanges O D attached to its lower side", which support it in such a way as to leave a space between it and the bottom of the boiler A. The flanges ,G extend along the middle part of the side edges of the false bottom B for a distance equal to half the length, more or less, of said boiler. The flanges D extend across the bottom B between the ends of the flanges O, as shown in Fig. 1, and in dotted lines in Fig- 2. The lower edge of the middle parts of the flanges D is concaved, as shown in Fig. 1, to form a communication or passage for the water from the end spaces or chambers E to the central space or chamber F. In the end parts of the false bottom B are formed holes for the passage of the water from the body of the boiler into the chambers E,
which holes are covered with caps G, which are connected with and secured to-the said false bottom B by bolts, pins, or screws, in such a way that the said capsG may be held at a little distance above the bottom B, so as to allow the water to flow freely into the chambers E, while supporting the clothes so that they cannot be drawn into said holes, and thus impede the circulation of the water. In the central part of the false bottom is formed a larger hole, in or around which is secured the lower end of a tube, H, which we preferto make tapering, as shown in Fig. 1, and to the formed a head-piece, I, made in the form of two cones placed base to base, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. We prefer to arrange these cones so that their lower sides may be horizontal, as shown in Fig. 1. In the lower'part of the opposite sidesof the two parts of the head-piece I are formed lines of small holes, as shown in Fig. 1. The head-piece I may be made detachable, as shown in Fig. 1, if desired. The false bottom B and flanges O D are made of wood. The other parts of the device may be made of tin or other suitable sheet metal.
In using the machine the heat applied to the bottom of the boiler forces the hot water up through the pipe E into the head-piece I through the holes in which it is discharged upon the clothes in the boiler. The upward flow of water from the central chamber F tends to form a vacuum in the end chambers E, so that the descent of the water through the clothes into said end chambers is assisted by atmospheric pressure. 7
Havingthus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bottom B, flanges C D, caps G, pipe H, and perforated double-cone head-piece I, constructed and arranged in connection with each other substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose'set forth.
