IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-HEATRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,136, dated December 22, 1874; appli catior led December 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SHOCK, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Radiators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.
My invention relates to that class of steamradiators in which one or more series of vertical pipes are arranged upon a base or con- (lensing box, the pipes of each series being' connected by means of U-shaped connections at their ends; and it consists in animprovement in radiators Where a water-seal is used at the bottom of the pipes, in providing a device allowing the steam free circulation, yet furnishing means for the escape of the condensed steam, while the main current of steam does not come in contact with the water in the box, thus preventing condensation to a great extent.
This is accomplished by means of providing the lower connections with a siphon, bent tube, or its equivalent; to form a water-seal, whereby the steam is prevented from going directly into the box, and keeping the same in continuous circulation, and the condensed steam is allowed to iiow into the box, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out by the claim.
In the annexed drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal section of a steam-radiator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section through one of the bottom connections.
A represents the base or condensing box, provided at one end with a waste-pipe, a. Upon the base A are placed one or more series of vertical pipes, B B, the pipes of each series being connected at their upper ends by inverted U-shapcd connections O C, and at their lower ends by U-shaped connections D D, so as to form a continuous pipe for the passage of the steam, the last pipe ot' each series, however, reaching down into the box A. `E represents the steam-pipe from the boiler, conveying steam into a T-pipe, G, which is connected with the rst pipe, B, in each series of vertical pipes 5 and in each of said connections is a globe valve, b, by the use of which the steam may be made to pass through either of the series of pipes, or through as many of them as may be desired.

The condensed steam in the pipes is allowed to escape into the box through a siphon, or its equivalent, attached to a projection, m, in the center of each of the Ushaped connections D, through the top of the box. To pre vent the egress ot' the steam through these apertures x is lthe object' of my invention; and to this end I apply a small siphon, d., or its equivalent, under each of said apertures within the box A.
As the steam condenses in the pipes the water passes through the apertures into the siphons d, filling them, and forming waterseals, which eli'ectually prevent the escape of steam, through said apertures, into the box.
Of course, after the siphons are iilled, the excess of condensed steam will pass into the box A. The steam thus has a free and continuous passage through all the pipes of the series, and passes through the last one only into the box, and becomes condensed, the water being drawn oftl from said box through the waste-pipe a.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a steam-radiator consisting of one or more series of vertical pipes, B, connected by means of U-shaped connections O D, and arranged upon a condensing-box, A, the siplions d, arranged under the centers of the lower U- shaped connections D, to form water-seals, and prevent the passage of steam from the pipes into the box, all combined substantially as herein set forth.
