Description

tttirh nde- DAVID MCcLnAnY, or ALLEGIIENY cITV, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 114,457, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sam'e.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Beit known that I, DAVID MCGLEARY, of the city and county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wash-Bodem and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,.clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.`
The nature of my invention consists in a Washboiler provided with a false bottom, perforated s o that the water will flow down from the clothes into a series o f chambers, fromwvhichit ows into a' boiling-chamber, from which the boiling water is conveyed by a series of tubes and deposited upon the np'- per surface ofthe clothes in the boiler, as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and operation.
. In the accompanying drawing which forms part of my specication- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of my improved wash-boiler at line y of iig. 3.
Figure 2 is alongitudinal and vertical section of the same at line y' of iig. 3.
Figure 3 is a top view or plan of the wash-boiler when the lid is removed.
A represents the body of the boiler, which-is'of the ordinary construction, except that it is' provided with tubes B, G, and D.
These tubes communicatewith the interior of the boilerby openings E next to bottom F, and diminish in size .from the bottom to their outlet at f.- l
The false bottom h is provided with a large numbe of small openings,xx, as' indicated in tig. 3,- and is furnished with three receiving-chambers, which communicate with the lower part of the tubes B, C, and D," and also with the boiling-chamber J.
The boiling-chamber is separated from the receiving-chambers l, m, and n by the diaphragm o, and the receiving-chambers are formed lby the partitions It, placed between the diaphragm o and false bottom h.
The false bottom and parts connected 'to it are manipulated by means of handles vs.
P represents the, lid of boiler.
u represents-the handles for the body A.
As the construction and arrangement of the several parts of my improvement in wash-boiler will be readily understood from the accompanying drawing and the foregoing description, I will therefore proceed to describe the operation, which is as follows;
Water is placed in the body A, after which the vclothes to be boiled are arranged in itxin the usual manner. The lid I is then placed on the body A, as indicated in iigs. 1 and 2. lhe boiler ips then placed on the stove or over other 'heating device, and as soon as the water commences to boil it Hows up pipes or tubes B, G, and D, and Hows from their outlets f over the clothes, and passing'down through them ows through the openings x into the chambers l, jm, and n, from which it is drawn by the up-owing currents through pipes or tubes B., G, and D, and thus contiuues to circulate untilthe boiling process is completed.
By the arrangement of the several parts hereinbefore described the boiling process is greatly facilitated, and the vforce and quantity of water poured over the clothes greatly increased, which will speedily and thoroughly wash out the dirt "from the clothes.
The hereinbefore-described arrangement of parts gives a greater 'capacity in the body A for receiving vtheclothes than can possibly be obtained where the tubes are attached to the false bottom I wish it clearly understood that AI do not claim broadly, circulating-tubes in combination with a washboiler; but
v What I claim as of my invention is The combination and arrangement of the false bot tomh, receiving-chambers Lm, andn, boiling-chamber J, circulating-tubes B, (l, and D, all constructed, arranged, and operating with relation to the body A, as herenbefore described and for the purpose set forth.
' DAVID MCOLEARY.
