EPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,148, dated October 13, 1903. Application filed July 10,1903. Serial No. 164,975. (No model.)
ton, in the county of Eflingham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in- Sugar-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a partof this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a sugar-boiler that will possess the advantages in thoroughly and effectively boiling the syrup by giving a uniform heat thereto by the steam beinglet in through the center of the boiler and in other respects improving the construction in its several details, whereby a superior quality of syrup is obtained through the successful removal of the skum that arises therefrom.
The invention consists in a sugar-boiler constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a sugar-boiler constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal vertical section thereof; Fig. 3, a top plan view showing the cover and spout thereof removed to show the arrangement of the steam pipes; Fig. 4, a transverse sectional elevation taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3 with the spout and cover replaced; Fig. 5, a detail view in perspective of one of the ver tical strainers adapted for attachment to the side walls of the boiler.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a boiler, at the bottom of which is located a curved pipe B, through which. the steam passes to impart heat to the sugar, said pipe extending out through the ends of the boiler and is provided with suitable faucets a b or other means forcontrolling the supply of steam and the discharge thereof.
Thesteam is let in the boiler at the center thereof instead of at the side, which will effectually heat the juice in the center first and cause it to boil at that point, so as to break the coat of skum and compel it to float back on each side and over upon the laterally-projecting tables 0 and into the troughs D, and
thence into and through a'discharge-pipe c, and finally into a tub or other suitable receptacle placed in convenient position to receive it. The side walls of the boiler A are provided with brackets cl,of any suitable con- 'struction, to receive the arms 6 of a vertical strainer E. This strainer may be of any suitable construction and removably connected to the walls of the boiler in any preferred manner found best adapted to the purpose, the skum flowing over and through these strainers onto the laterally-projecting tables, where it is wiped off,the juice returninginto the body of the boiler. If desired, an additional strainer maybe provided, as shown at F in Fig. 4 of the drawings, said strainers being of anysuitable construction, one being placed upon each of the tables 0.
'The strainer consists, preferably, of a wire frame covered with cloth, although any strainer may be substituted that will thoroughly cleanse the syrup as it is finally discharged from the boiler.
.1 do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to steam as a heating medium, as any heat-generating device may be used in connection with the boiler that will impart the necessary heat to the syrup contained therein.
Any suitable and well-known means may be provided for drawing off the syrup from the boiler, such as a faucet f, communicating with the interior of the boiler at the bottom thereof, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
. A solid imperforate cover G is provided for the boiler A, which has a suitable spout H extending up therefrom, and the cover has suitable handles 9 for lifting it off the boiler or replacing it, as circumstances require, said cover having an inclined breastway I, (shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings,) said cover being round or any other shape to fit any boiler.
Heretofore the covers were made perfectly flat, and consequently would buckle in the center when the steam was turned on and would hold the scum; but with the breastway, which forms a depression in the cover and materially strengthens it against buckling, an open chamber and guide is formed for the rising scum, which will follow up the incline of the guideway and escape through the spout.
In the construction of the boiler and its connections it is evident that many changes or modifications may be made therein without in any manner afiecting the essential features of the invention and may be made of any size, shape, and dimensions found most desirable.
Having now fully described my invention,
I what I claim as new, and desire to scan re by Letters Patent, is
1. A sugar-boiler having laterally-extending tables with troughs having discharges for the syrup, strainers removably connected to the side walls of the boiler, and a cover with discharge-spout, said cover having an inclined breastway upon its under side, substantially as and for the purpose described.
