Description

ft-intimi tatrtf attest titte JOHN P. sHEEWooD, 0E EoET EDWARD, NEW YonK,Ass1eNoE To HIM- sELE AND BENJAMIN s. BUENHAM, or SAME PLACE.` A
Letters Patent No. 98,199, dated December 2 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. SHERWOOD, of Fort v Edward, in the' county otl Washiugton,-and State of New York, have invented a new, and usei'ul Improvement in Washing-Boilers; and l do hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others-skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beingr had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specilication, in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved boiler, taken through the line x x of iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, t'ake'n through the line y y, tig. l.
Similar letters ot' reterence indicate corresponding parts.
My intention has for its object toimprove the construction ofthat class of washing-boilers in which the clothes are washed by the water as it boils, being projected down upon the clothes, to percolate through them, and thus-remove the dirt; and
It consists in the combination, with the perforated false-hottom, of the end discharge-spouts, of peculiar construction, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A represents an ordinary wash-boiler, about the construction ot' which there is nothing new.
B is a false bottom, which is placed a little above the bottom of thc boiler A, so as to leave a space -below it for the water.
The water-space below the false bottom B vis divided into two compartments by the cross-partition C, the upper edgeof which is attached to the said false bottom B at or near its middle, and the lower edge of which rests upon the bottom otthe boiler AJ When the fire is hotter under one part or end ot' the boiler' than it is under the. other cud, the tendencyis for the water to be drawn toward vthe hotter end ot' the boiler, and be discharged through the spontat that end, leaving the other spout inactivo. The partition C guards against this temlency, and secures the chculalitfn of the water through both spouts, thougl'iA in volumes proportioned to the diti'erence in heat ofthe two ends oi' the boiler.
'lhe false bottom B is corrugated longitudinally upon each side of its central line, with two upwardlyprojecting corrugations, b', as shown in igs. l and 2,
extending from one endof said bottom to the other,
so as to form channels for the hottest part ot' the water and the steam to pass to the end spouts D.
The part ot' the false bottom B between and atthe sides ofthe corrugations b', is perforated with numerous holes, to allow the water to vflow back freely to the space beneath the false bottoni B. s
The parts of the false bottom B toward its ends are vmade without perforations, so that bthe water may flow through said bottom only along its middle part, thus introducing the cooler water over the middle or hottest part of the tire, 'and also preventing the cooler water from mingling with the water as it is abot passing up the ond spouts D. s y
The spouts D pass up the ends ot' thefboilerA, with the form of which ends the outer sides of the said spouts correspond. AThe innersides of the s'pouts D incline' outward, so that the said spouts may become narrower as they approach the top of the boiler The upper ends el of the spoutsD are inclined inward and downward, as shown in fig. l, and are made broad and tapering.
The'under side ofthe inwardly and downwardlyprojecting parts d of the spouts D are corrugated, the said corrugations beginning at or near the angle or bend of the spouts, and gradually increasing in depth, until, 'at the ends ofthe spouts, they touch the upper sides ot' the said spouts, thus'dividing vthe streamsof water into a series of thin sheets, which, ilowing from the spouts at "the two ends of the boilers, meet, and are spread over theentire surface of the clothes, thoroughly removing thedirt from all their parts.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent- A The two end sponts, D, having their inwardly-projecting upper parts d', constructed in the manner herein shown and described, in combination with the -corrugated and Aperforated false bottom B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
`IJOHN l). SHERWOOD.
