ATEN T FINIS L. BATES, OF WINONA, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
151,000, dated May 19, 1874; application filed February 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FINIs L. BATES, of Winona, Carroll county, Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved cotton-bale tie; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on the line a c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to and consists in the construction of the ties by which bale-bands are held in place, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents the bale-tie, made of suitable material and strength. It is shaped in the form of the letter U, and constructed with legs B of rectangular cross-seetion, extending from the strong base part. The legs B are so arranged in diagonal posi tion to the base that the tie rests thereby on the lower corners of the same. The upper diagonally opposite corner of each leg is flattened or recessed in such a manner that a projection or spur, a, is retained at the end, having the full shape of the cross-section. The ends of the hoop-band G are slipped over the legs B of the tie by being to the sides of the same, ance is offered. When both ends are thus placed in position, the upper part of the hoop rests on the flattened upper edge, While the lower corner presses firmly on the shorter end of the band, and serves to lock it rigidly in position. The end projections keep the bands in position on the tie, and prevent thereby the detaching of the same. The hoop is bound around the bale by this tie in a simple and very secure manner, and applied smoothly and rapidly thereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bale-band tie A, having tWoend-spurred legs, B B, plain-faced on top, and with sharp corners subjacently and in front, as shown and described, so that the end of the band will be prevented from slipping, however great "may be the strain or jars to which it may be subjected.
