Description

S pt 16 G. E. WILLIAMS CONTAINER FOR WIPER CLOTHS Filed April 25 1923 Patented Sept. 16, 1924.

CONTAINER FOR 'WIPER CLOTHS.
Application filed April 23, 1523. Serial No. 634,202. 1 7X1 'i T 0 aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. VVILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers for /Viper Cloths; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a container adapted to receive and hold in shape articles of curved shape. The container was particularly designed to contain and retain in shape a novel form of wiper cloth such as used in making lead joints. These cloths, while flexible, are given a permanent curved shape and in order to retain this shape the same are packed and shipped in the novel container of this invention. It is an object of this invention, therefore to provide a container of special form which is adapt ed to receive the wiper cloths and to retain the same in proper condition.
It is a further object of the invention to provide such a container having straight or plane side walls and curved or cylindrical parallel front and rear walls, together with a bottom and a hinged cover.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different and curved or semi-cylindrical front and rear walls 2 and 3, respectively. These walls have secured thereto a bottom member t which will be soldered or otherwise suitably secured in position. The container is also provided with a cover which, as illustrated, comprises the top member 5 having a flange 6 adapted to fit around the walls 1 and 2 and which is hinged at its rear side adj acent its side edges to the rear wall 3. As
clearly shown in Fig. 2, the rear wall 3 has short straight or plane portions immediately adjacent the side: walls 1 and each straight portion has an ear or lug 7 formed centrally thereof, as shownin Figs. 2 and 8.
This lug is embraced by a pair of cars or cloths after they have been used and during periods of non-use so that'they will always be kept in their proper shape and will not be distorted and crushed out of shape by contact with heavy tools while being carried in the plumbers or cable splicers kit. The container also prevents the cloths from accumulating dirt, brass and other filings,
etc., which affect the solder and greatly in-' terferes with the wiping of the joint. Many plumbers and other workmen carry a wiping cloth in their pockets and the container can thus conveniently be carried.
From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided a simple and efficient means for packing and shipping the cloths and for carrying and retaining the same in proper condition. The containers are inexpensively made and constitute a simple and efficient means for the purpose set forth.
It will, of course, be understood, that various changes may be made in the details, arrangements and proportions of the device without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in a device for carrying out the objects above enumerated and such as shown and described and set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is: r
1. A container adapted to receive and re tain in shape curved wiper cloths and comprising plane end Walls, parallel semi-cylindrical front and rear walls shaped to correspond to the curvature of said cloths, said rear wall having plane end portions a bottom member and a cover for said container hinged about an axis extending at right angles to said end walls. 7
2, container adapted to receive and retain in shape curved Wiper cloths and comprising parallel plane end Walls, a semicylindrical front wall, a rear Wall having its major portion curved in substantially the same direction as said front Wall and having short side portions which are plane and perpendicular to said end Walls, a bot tom member and a flanged cover Which is hinged to the top of said plane portions of said rear Wall.
8. A container adapted to receive and re tain in shape curved Wiper cloths comprising plane parallel end Walls of equal Width, a rear Wall curved on the arc of a circle and having narrow plane portions at its ends disposed at right angles to said end Walls and having a concave exterior, a front Wall curved on a slightly larger radius than said rear Wall having a convex outer side, said curved vvalls being disposed symmetrically about the central axis of said container, a flat bottom for said container and a flanged flat top therefor hinged to said narrow plane portions of said rear Wall.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
