INDIVIDUAL BRUSH KEEP AND SHAPER Filed Nov. 17, 1931 v INVENTOR. 50/? 7'- Jf/i/f'L E6 Patented Aug. 23,1932
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BUB! BRAD-LB, mar HAN GABRIEL, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HUGm 3. LEE, 0] ION'I'EBEY PARK, CALIFORNIA INDIVIDUAL BRUSH KEEP AND SHAPED.
Application filed November 17, 1881. Serial No. 575,570.
This invention relates to individual brush kee and shapers.
he general ob'ect of the invention 1s to provide an indivi ual brush keep and shaper a which is adapted to hold a brush between periods of use and to maintain the brush in such condition and shape that it will be alwa s in condition for proper use.
. more specific object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which comprises a front and back, the two being substantially wedge shape when assembled and being adapted to receive a brush and maintain the same in proper condition.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a brush keep and shaper comprising front and back members, each havin triangular flanges thereon with means to old the members against the faces of the brush.
Other objects of the invention w ll be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawin wherein:
ii 1 is a perspective view of a brush keep ying the features of my inand s aper embo vention.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the brush keep in operative osition and showin a spacing member use therein enso abling rushes of various sizes to be used.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the slidable retaining sleeve.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a modified form of retamlng means.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section taken on line 5-5, Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a bucket containing oil and showing a brush in one of my keeps disposed therein.
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a modified form of brush keep and shaper, and,
Fi 8 is a lan view of the blank from whic the brus keep and shaper in Fig. 7 1s made.
Referrin to the drawing by reference characters, have shown my invention as embodied in an individual brush keep and shaper indicated generally at 10.
As shown this device comprises a receptacle including a front member 11 and a rear member 12. The front is provided with a pair of flanges 13 and the rear is provided with a pair of flanges 14. These flanges 13 and 14 are triangular in shape and converge towards the bottom of the receptacle where I arrange pintle engaging members 15 which engage a pintle pin 16 to hingedly connect the front and back 12. The front and back are provided with apertures 16' for a purpose to be presently described. The flanges 13 fit without the flanges 14 in contiguous relation as shown in Fig. 2.
In the use of my invention a. brush is placed against the front 11 or the back 12 and they front and back are brought to the position shown in Fig. 2. The width of the receptacle closely approximates the width of the brush and the tapering of the front and back corresponds to the normal taper of the brush so that the brush is held in proper position.
To hold the brush keep in the receptacle in an assembled position, I provide a sleeve indicated at 17 and this sleeve as well as the front 11 and back 12 may be made of suitable metal or composition as desired. The sleeve 17 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 where it will hold the front and back in proper position.
In case a brush of a narrower width is to be used in the keep, I may insert a filler 18 which may be a triangular block of wood altho I prefer to provi e a separate keep for each brush.
When the brush is inserted in the keep the latter is preferably placed in a container of oil as indicated at 18' and the oil will have access to the brush through the aperture 16, thus maintaining the brush in perfect condition and increasing its life and enabling the painter to work with a perfectly conditioned brush thus greatly increasing his efficiency.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown the front 11A and the back 12A as provided with flanges 13A and 14A. The flange 14A. is provided with a plurality of apertures 18A while the flange 13A is provided with a boss 19 which is adapted to fitthe apertures and hold the front and back in assembled relation. When the boss 19 and apertures 18A are pro- 1,00
vided, I prefer to omit the sleeve 17 altho both or either may be used as desired.
As shown in Figs. 7 and 8 I may make my keep from a blank 20 havin flange members 21 which are ada ted to be nt on fold lines 22 to provide a ront 23, a back 24 and side flan es 25 and 26 as shown in Fig. 7
T 0 blank shown in Fi 8 may be provided with apertures 27 for e same purpose as 1 the aperture 16' and may also be provided with a boss 28 and holes 29 which correspond to the boss 19 and apertures 18A previously described. The blan shown in Fi 8 is bent up into shape shown in Fig. 7 an thus provides a one piece keep.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that I ave invented a novel form of brush keep which is highly eflicient in use and which can be economically manufactured.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim:
1. In a brush keep device of the class described, a front member, a back member, a pintle connecting said members, each of said members having a trian lar flange thereon at each side thereof orming ends, said flanges having their bases at the end opposite said pintle and means to hold said front and back in angular relation, said means com- 30 prising a sleeve rectangular in cross-section and shdable along said keep, said sleeve engaging said front member, said back member and said ends.
2. The combination of a brush kee and a removable brush en ging block, said rush keep. having oppose pairs of overlapping triangular slde walls and having rectangular front and back members to form a wedge shaped recegtacle, said brush engaging block being, of we ge shape and narrower than said receptacle and means to hold said front and back members in closed relation said means comprising a rectangular clip shdable along said brush keep.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
